Diam Bouchage Introduces Origine® by Diam a New, Technologically Advanced Sustainable CorkMade from Natural Ingredient Cork, Beeswax and 100% Vegetable Polyols
NAPA, Calif. (February 22, 2017) – Twelve years after launching its DIAMANT® technology, Diam Bouchage, a global leader in manufacturing technological corks, is once again ready to revolutionize the wine packaging world with Origine® by Diam, a new sustainable cork and major technological and environmental advancement.

“This new innovation offers a natural sealing solution while maintaining the proven reliability of Diam Bouchage in terms of guaranteed no detectable TCA, consistency and oxygen control,” said Francois Margot, Diam Bouchage Sales Manager for North America.
For years, Diam Bouchage’s Research & Development department has worked to develop new, environmentally-friendly products. Today, after several years of research on natural ingredients, Diam Bouchage offers Origine by Diam, made from cork, beeswax emulsion and 100% vegetable polyols. This new technology is the result of research combining permeability and natural ingredients, and it responds to the demand from premium customers to create more open permeability closures that maintain the long life needed for aging wines. Currently, Origine by Diam will be offered for Diam 10 and Diam 30 closures in the Diam range for still wines. In the near future, it will be extended to other closures offered by Diam Bouchage.
“The use of beeswax reflects our company’s commitment to green practices and products,” said Margot. He added, “It is also reflected in the name we chose, Origine by Diam. Pollination performed by honeybees is the basis of the biodiversity of our planet. With oxygen, it is the origin(e) of the life cycle of our cork oaks, and thus, our closures. This is why Diam Bouchage is also contributing money to support critical habitats for bees by sponsoring hives in different French wine regions to help build and sustain bee populations.”
Diam Bouchage, a French company located in the Pyrenees Orientales, annually produces and sells more than 1.5 billion closures. For more than 10 years, Diam has built its success on the revolutionary DIAMANT process that extracts TCA molecules* responsible for cork taint, as well as other molecules that can affect the taste of wine.

Diam Shares Comparative Oxygen Study FindingsLast year Diam launched the all natural Diam Origine 10 and 30 made with beeswax, which like the classic Diam goes through the Diamant process that disinfect the cork to create a consistent TCA free closure with a reliable oxygen transfer rate. This year Diam added Origine 5 for shorter aging wines, but more remarkably, they shared the discovery and subsequent research into the different evolution of wine sealed with Diam 10 classic and Diam 10 Origine.
Diam’s research shows that there are two phases of oxygen from the cork that affects the wine; there’s the Oxygen Initial Release (OIR), which is determined by the amount of oxygen stored inside the cork and impacting the aromas’ development early on and up to six months after bottling. Then the Oxygen Transfer Rate, the speed of oxygen ingress over time, takes over and determines the wine evolution as it ages.
Diam’s observations showed that the Origine 10 had a higher OIR than the Diam 10 Classic with the same OTR. This knowledge can be a helpful tool for winemakers to decide which closure to use depending on their early and long term ageing goals for the wine. An young release of Cabernet Sauvignon might benefit from a more rapid development early on combined with a slower development long term making the Diam Origine the right choice, while the same winemaker might want to preserve the crispness of his Sauvignon Blanc for longer and decide to go with Diam Classic for a lower OIR.

A Closure for Wines Committed to Quality and SustainabilityBy Barbara Barrielle
Origine by DIAM, a 2018 WINnovation Award Winner
Francois Margot, North American Sales Manager for DIAM BOUCHAGE, has seen his company grow since launching their cork products 15 years ago, to be the second largest cork producer in the world and their presence in the American market is remarkable for a relatively young company.
To call DIAM a cork company is tells only part of the story. The technology they have developed relies on the efficiency of natural cork as a closure, but works to eliminate the inconsistencies in natural cork that can lead to flaws in wine.
“Naturally punched cork has been used for decades….centuries because it is an elastic product,” says Margot, “you put it in a bottle and it expands and seals. But the problem is that cork is inconsistent in three major ways.”
The first issue with natural cork is that it potentially contains molecules that will get into the wine that will cause what is called cork taint, so the producer runs a sensory risk of altering the taste of the wine.
The second issue is that the inconsistency of 100% punched natural cork allows a different amount of oxygen transfer into the wine.
And, lastly, the mechanical issue of differing elasticity means the seal from the cork may be compromised when the elasticity decreases over time and there is no way of knowing the long-term capability of the seal.
“So much more than a simple stopper, the cork is the last oenological act of the winegrower. It must enable the wine to fully develop in the bottle throughout the ageing period and maintain the aromatic profile sought for a particular wine,” explains DIAM CEO Dominique Tourneix. “This is why the teams at DIAM Bouchage work each and every day to ensure the quality of the company’s products in terms of mechanical performance, sensorial neutrality and oxygen control.”

The scientists at DIAM still feel the base of natural cork is an excellent bottle stopper, but these inconsistencies could be eliminated by improving on the punched cork stopper. There is no shortage of cork in the world and using cork promotes the growth of the oak tree forests in the Mediterranean areas where it is harvested. Cork is regenerated quickly, every nine years, and Portugal and Spain make up eighty percent of the cork production.
DIAM takes the original inconsistent natural cork and extracts 150 different compounds to create a very clean cork that can control aromas and oxygen transfer.
Margot says that the Origine by DIAM goes a step further in creating a bio-based cork with the same properties that minimize inconsistencies. The Origine stopper combines natural cork along with a binding agent composed of 100% bio-based polyol from a totally renewable source. Years of research went into this sustainable product from an innovative ingredient – castor seeds – exclusively of plant origin that respects the environment and adheres to sustainable standards as does the cork harvest.
The third ingredient in the Origine by DIAM cork is pure, natural beeswax which is derived in a patented process to make corks totally watertight, protecting the wine against any capillary migration and protecting the integrity of the cork elasticity. Bees contribute hugely to our biodiversity and in recognition of this, DIAM Bouchage has decided to support an association dedicated to the preservation of the future of bees.
While DIAM corks can range from 12 to 80 cents per cork depending on the uniqueness of the product. Margot explain that Origine by DIAM will be more expensive and, therefore customers have been primarily producers of fine, more expensive wines.
“Origine by DIAM is very close to the performance of the traditional DIAM products but Origine is made from bio-based products,” says Margot, “and globally producers that want to go the biodynamic route will appreciate Origine by DIAM.”
Winemakers can have their corks customized depending on how much oxygen they want transferring through the cork and whether the cork needs an extended seal for aging or whether the wine is made to be drunk young. DIAM and Origine by DIAM give winemakers and wine producers options for wine stoppers while still promoting cork production and international biodynamics and respect for the future of the earth.

This Year’s “Wine Conversations: A Global Tasting and Marketing Forum” To Feature Costco’s Annette Alvarez-Peters as Keynote SpeakerMODESTO, CA, January 19, 2017 — What’s the secret to producing the best wine and, once it’s packaged, selling it through? To gain insights into those two key questions, plugged-in winemakers, wine marketers and winery purchasing professionals have marked their calendars for the fourth annual “Wine Conversations: A Global Tasting and Marketing Forum,” Monday, February 6, in Woodinville, WA, and Wednesday, February 8, in Santa Rosa, CA. This popular, efficiently-run event takes place from 10AM to 1PM, including lunch.
Hosted by DIAM Closures USA, part of global technical cork closure leader DIAM Bouchage, and their U.S. distributor G3 Enterprises, this annual event has fast attained “must-attend” status thanks to its ability to feature industry powerhouses whose insights can impact your bottom line. Costco’s principal wine buyer, Annette Alvarez-Peters, Assistant General Merchandise Manager for Beverage Alcohol, is this year’s keynote speaker. The other attraction is that the event is intimate enough for attendees to share ideas and experience a truly delightful global wine tasting. “What separates this event from others,” says DIAM’s North American Sales Manager François Margot, a trained winemaker himself, “is that this is not just a technical presentation — though we will be announcing an exciting new product. The focus is on fun and learning from one another. It’s all about tasting great wines and building the DIAM community.” Last year alone, over 1.5 billion bottles were sold with DIAM technical corks – closures formed from natural cork after being ground and treated with the patented DIAMANT® Super Critical CO2 process.
The conversation kicks off with an annual favorite: a double-blind tasting of 12 top quality wines from around the world, all closed with DIAM corks. Always a voyage of discovery, attendees are invited to take their best guesses as to the provenance and grape composition of the wines. Last year’s tasting included a surprising, top-quality wine from China. This year’s tasting will be led by Master Sommelier Evan Goldstein, who not only brings extensive knowledge to the table, but creates an entertaining environment that participants are sure to enjoy. In 1987, Goldstein became the eighth American — and at the time the youngest ever — to pass the prestigious Master Sommelier examination. He has since written several critically-acclaimed books, including Perfect Pairings, Daring Pairings and Wines of South America: The Essential Guide.
Following the global tasting, two local winemakers will share some of their most valuable winery experiences and observations. At the Washington State event, guests will hear from winemakers John Bigelow, Owner of JM Cellars and Trey Busch, Co-owner of Sleight of Hand Cellars. At the Sonoma event Elena Franceschi, Associate Winemaker at Silverado Vineyards, and Rick Sayre, Senior VP Winemaking at Rodney Strong Vineyards, will present.
The keynote speaker at both forums will be Costco’s Annette Alvarez-Peters, who will share her latest insights on the current market. One of the most influential wine retailers in the U.S., Costco has been recognized as Retailer of the Year by Wine Enthusiast (2015), Washington State Wine Industry (2015) and Market Watch (2011). As chief wine buyer for the chain, Alvarez-Peters has been included on Decanter’s biennial Power List (2005-2013) and in Fortune magazine’s and Food &Wine magazine’s joint list of the 25 Most Innovative Women in Food and Drink (2014).

Advanced Manufacturing Process Accelerates DemandNew facility in France set to expand production capacity to 2 Billion Diam, one of the undisputed leaders in the wine enclosure industry, has experienced an explosive U.S. sales expansion, while planning for even greater capacity once its new production facility comes on line in France next year.
Diam is the creator of an innovative beverage closure system, which begins with the raw bark of a cork oak. The bark is crushed and filtered to remove woody materials and then, through the Diamant procedure utilizing CO2, the compounds responsible for sensory deviations in wine, including trichloroanisole, (TCA) are extracted.
“Natural cork has limits and some risks,” explains Francois Margot, Diam’s leading sales and export manager for North America. “There are a lot of molecules that can migrate into wine in a sensory way. DIAM has fixed that risk. We provide a 100 percent guarantee against TCA taint and a mechanical performance in our products that can exceed the shelf life of cork.”*
Margot points out that it is consistency “from bottle to bottle” that has excited winemakers around the globe and is responsible for doubling Diam’s market share in the U.S over the last two years. “We’ve seen an increasing number of wineries convert their entire production to Diam closures,” says Margot.
The company, which also makes closures for sparkling wine (Mytik) and spirits (Altop), has created a product for wine that can control oxygen transmission at three different levels; medium OTR (oxygen transfer rate) low OTR and very low OTR. This allows the winemaker to choose the closure that will fit the evolution of the wine. Their latest innovation, Diam 30, has a mechanical guarantee to remain elastic enough to preserve wine for at least 30 years.
“It is the first product on the market to give such a guarantee,” Margot asserts. “The key point here is security. The Diam 30 is made for high-end premium wines intended to age for years. We guarantee to bring the craftsmanship of the winemaker to the consumer in every bottle, with security even after 20, 25, or 30 years in the bottle.”
DIAM’s Spanish factories in San Vicente de AlcaÌntara can churn out nearly 1.3 billion cork-product enclosures each year, and when the French facility in CeÌret is fully operational next June, capacity is expected to reach 2 billion closures.
Diam partners with G3 Enterprises, a leading packaging and logistics provider for the wine, spirits, microbrew and specialty food industries, in providing best customer services to wineries in North America. G3 finishes and prints Diam corks at its Modesto plant. “G3 has been a great partner. Their sales force and technical services are very strong. This allows us to focus on making quality products while G3 builds strong front relationships and supports our customers,” concluded Margot.

World’s Most Advanced Cork Closure To Debut in U.S. at Unified Wine and Grape SymposiumDiam 30 is the first cork closure with a 30-year lifetime

MODESTO, Calif. (Janurary 14, 2014) – The new Diam 30, the world’s most advanced cork closure with the ability to last more than thirty years, will make its U.S. debut later this month at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento. Based on independent laboratory accelerated aging studies, the Diam 30 far surpasses the lifetime of natural corks.
“The Diam 30 is a new addition to our Diam range of closures and one of the most exciting developments in our industry. This innovation will help wineries avoid delicate, risky re-corking procedures after 20 years of cellaring,” said Dominique Tourneix, CEO Diam Bouchage.
The closure was developed for high-end wines by Diam Bouchage after years of research. Diam 30 has one of the lowest permeability rates of any closure on the market with a controlled oxygen intake. Its manufacturing process guarantees absolute consistency from one closure to another which assures winemakers a slow, consistent aging process throughout the wine’s entire cellaring period. In addition, the patented DIAMANT® process insures every Diam 30 closure will guarantee no cork TCA* and guard against many other molecules which result in off aromas or flavors. Diam 30 will be presented at the Diam booth #317 at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California.
“The Diam 30 closure is perfect for the luxury wine market to safeguard wine throughout the aging process and to assure a consistent aging process,” said Mihailo Panovich, Vice President of sales for G3 Enterprises. He added, “Given Diam’s cork technology and expertise, I am confident Diam 30 will be very successful in the U.S.”

He added, “Being local is very important to us and we want to be close to our customers who will now have the option to pick up their order if they wish or have it delivered.”

Laser printing delivers high-end precision artwork on both the side and the ends of the cork with more flexibility on production. The Napa printing facility will also offer ink printing and batch coating capable of handling small orders. Multiple coatings will be available for DIAM® 5, 10, 30, Origine by Diam® for still wines and Mytik sparkling wine closures.
DIAM® has become the closure of choice for winemakers and winery owners around the world due, in part, to its clean, consistent, sensory-neutral cork which ensures the wine ages in the bottle as intended by the winemaker. Year after year, DIAM® delivers unbeatable mechanical performance. DIAM® corks are available with different levels of permeability in relation to the oxygen requirements for each wine making it possible for the wines to express their unique sensory profiles.
The Origine by Diam® closure has revolutionized the wine world because of its major technological advancement that combines science and nature. As a result of many years of research into beeswax emulsion and 100% plant-derived polyols, Origine by Diam® offers a sustainable, all-natural corking solution, while maintaining the superior reliability of DIAM®.

Diam Bouchage Continues Its Innovation and Environmental Commitment with Launch of Innovative New ProductsNew Closure Solutions Unveiled at 2025 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium

Napa, 01/23/25 – Diam Bouchage, the leading manufacturer of technical cork closures for still wines, sparkling wines and spirits, is proud to announce the launch of its latest innovations at the 2025 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium. With a 20-year legacy rooted in the revolutionary DIAMANT® process, Diam Bouchage has consistently prioritized research and development, transforming the cork closure market with a focus on oxygen management, natural raw materials, and closure aesthetics.
In 2017, Diam Bouchage introduced the Origine by Diam range, an innovative solution combining a beeswax emulsion and a 100% plant-based polyol binding agent with cork granulates. This range offers a natural closure solution while maintaining the reliability of Diam® closures in terms of organoleptic security, consistency, and controlled permeability. Today, the French cork closure manufacturer announces its bio-based range expansion from Diam Origine 30, 10, 5 to introduce Diam Origine 3. The Diam 3 Origine, an affordable option available now, offers a 3-year mechanical guarantee —or a 6-year guarantee when stored at 58°F – and features a slightly higher oxygen input, making it suitable for both long-aging and faster-moving wines.
Collection by Diam: Crafting a Unique Closure Without Compromising DIAM Performance
Building on its commitment to innovation, Diam Bouchage is excited to present the Diam Collection closure. This unique product features a core of Diam technical cork, elegantly clad with a thin sheet of carefully selected cork, which is then treated with the DIAM cleaning process using Supercritical CO2. The high-precision cladding technique, developed exclusively by Diam, ensures each closure meets the technical and aesthetic expectations of winemakers. The Diam Collection is free of TCA, the compound responsible for cork taint.
Christophe Loisel, R&D Director at Diam Bouchage, states, “The Diam Collection addresses the challenge of assessing the true quality of traditional closures. Our meticulous manufacturing process guarantees consistent mechanical performance and oxygen transfer, empowering winemakers to control the aging of their wines.”
The Diam Collection closure will be available at the end of 2025, initially in a DIAM 30 49 mm size.
G3 Enterprise is the exclusive distributor of Diam for North America, ensuring that these innovative products are accessible to winemakers across the region. Attendees of the 2025 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium are invited to visit the Diam booth 508 and G3 booth 600 to learn more about these groundbreaking products and view samples.

Experience the Importance of Cleaning Corks at the WIN ExpoSupercritical CO2 with Differentiated Pressure, the Cleaning Process for Corks
The wine industry is the only segment in the food and beverage industry that accepts that the closure might affect the product. Through a comparative tasting, DIAM and G3 will demonstrate the importance of cleaning corks. Supercritical CO2 with differentiated pressure is currently the only and safest technology to consistently ensure the removal of 150 molecules from the corks. With over 20 billion bottles corked using DIAM over the last 20 years; DIAM has been providing the most neutral corks to the market.
