Why Sustainability Matters in the Wine Industry
Sustainability Is a Business Imperative Wine consumers are now, more than ever, intentionally purchasing and consuming wine that mentions sustainability on their label or promote a sustainable story. 54% of the population is concerned about sustainability and is willing to adopt a mix of simple behavior changes in order to support businesses who practice sustainable initiatives (2023, Purposeful Priorities Report). Lawmakers are also increasingly demanding sustainable choices for wine packaging. New Zealand and Eastern Canada, for example, have enacted laws that require lightweight bottles. At the same time, retailers are rewarding sustainable brands with coveted shelf space. They’re also signing onto sustainability initiatives, including the Sustainable Wine Roundtable Bottle Weight Accord. Signatories to the SWR Bottle Weight Accord commit to reduce the weight of a standard 750ml wine bottle sold in their stores to below 420g by the end of 2026. Whole Foods, a signatory to the

Creating a Sustainable Ecosystem from Vine to Vendor
Wineries continue to increase their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. From harvesting grapes grown in more sustainably focused ways, to water conservation, and fostering healthier soils, there are many things that can be done in the vineyard to make a positive impact on the local ecosystem and wildlife habitat.  Beyond environmentally conscious agricultural practices, it is important that wineries look to vendors that operate with similar sustainability views. One impactful consideration is which organization you turn to for glass packaging. If you are looking to step up your efforts even further, there is a reason to choose O-I as that partner. Since 2017, the organization’s multi-pronged approach to sustainability has resulted in a nearly 20% reduction in greenhouse (GHG) emissions. Taking a more granular look at O-I, there are other factors that make the organization a leader in the sustainable packaging space. Here are some points to consider when it comes t

Glass Reimagined: Towards a Carbon-Free Wine Packaging Era
Glass Reimagined: Towards a Carbon-Free Wine Packaging Era    Every consumer goods manufacturer has a roadmap to environmentally friendly stewardship, with measurable goals for reducing carbon emissions, using sustainable resources and minimizing waste. With somewhere between 23% and 29% of a winery’s carbon footprint coming from the glass bottle, the challenge for the wine industry is to make the venerable glass bottle more sustainable considering that according to the latest EcoFocus® consumer trend survey, 85 % of American grocery shoppers over the age of 21 choose to buy wine in glass. The Core Value of Recycling    Recycling glass bottles is core to a circular packaging economy since recycled bottles are crushed and cleaned to produce cullet, which goes back into the glass furnace to make new bottles. Using this recycled cullet reduces the natural resources and energy needed to produce glass. In fact, increasing cullet to 55% reduces the use
