On February 20, 2026, in a victory for American beer, wine, and spirits importers, the Supreme Court in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, 607 US ____, Slip Op., February 20, 2026 (“Learning Resources”) struck down President Trump’s imposition of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (“IEEPA”). The Trump administration had used IEEPA to justify certain tariffs imposed on imported goods from various countries in 2025, including beer, wine and spirits. Despite the decision in the importers’ favor, no one is popping the Champagne quite yet. First, while the Court’s opinion invalidated the Trump administration’s IEEPA tariffs, it has no effect on the administrations’ ability to rely on other statutes to impose tariffs. Second, on the same day that the Supreme Court issued its decision, the President issued a proclamation imposing a 10% worldwide tariff under a different federal law (discussed in more detail belo

Global Package Exhibiting at the 2024 ADI Craft Spirits Conference and Vendor Expo - Booth 223 Baltimore MD The global shift toward sustainability is palpable across nearly every sector. Within the wine and spirits industries, this movement has gained remarkable traction, driven by consumers’ increasing demand for environmentally responsible products. 2024 brings about more pressure for industry to put sustainability at the center of all operations, but also provides opportunities for businesses to flourish by staying ahead of the trends in innovative and sustainable advancements. Here are four sustainability trends to keep an eye on in 2024: Regenerative practices for wine and spirits Recent years have seen a boom in conscious agricultural practices through the philosophy that all aspects of agriculture are connected. This philosophy emphasizes the careful utilization of land management to restore and regenerate the ecosystems and land we use, leaving it in better health for fu

The wine industry is evolving toward a circular economy. Pioneers in this movement include viticulturists who began the transition to regenerative agriculture and wineries leading the move to renewable energy like solar fields or more sustainable materials, such as lightweight bottles and post-consumer recycled labels. Efforts are spreading from these innovators to the broader industry as the impacts of climate change increase the urgency and neighbors see the effectiveness of these solutions. “While every industry is subject to trends, it is especially true for wine,” says Michael Garretson, who manages the RafCycle program at UPM Raflatac. “That could be because these companies are close neighbors. Driving along Highway 29 through Napa Valley, you see one winery after another. The same is true in Sonoma or Santa Barbara. They know each other; they’re members of the same organizations, attend the same conferences and events, and talk to each other. Even for a g

Overview The on-premise national accounts arena is one of the most complex, expensive, and time-consuming channels to pursue in the wine sales game — it’s also the most misunderstood! I recently returned from a wonderful trip to beautiful Kentucky for the ADI Craft Spirits Conference and Expo in Louisville. Global Package had a booth there, which was the first time we’d exhibited in more than a year and a half. What a joy it was to get back to meeting old and new friends at this event! Kentucky is gorgeous this time of year (see photos): lush greenery, blue skies, historic buildings, and wonderful people. And there’s so much to see: The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, Churchill Downs/Kentucky Derby Museum, not to mention all the local distilleries and craft breweries. There are even many wineries! While we think of California when it comes to wine, Kentucky has a good selection of vineyards and wineries, too, including the popular Purple Toad Cedar Creek
