From Shandon to the Sustainable Ag Expo Stage: Alberto’s Inspiring Journey
Growing up in the small town of Shandon, CA, Alberto was told that success might be out of reach. But working side by side with his father in the vineyards, he learned that dreams are worth fighting for. After graduating high school with honors, Alberto earned a welding certificate at Cuesta College and continued his education at Fresno State University with the help of the Juan Nevarez Memorial Scholarship. There, he discovered a passion for viticulture, excelled in his field, and built a strong professional network that helped shape his career. Now a college graduate and pursuing a master’s degree, Alberto is reaching another milestone: presenting his thesis at the 2025 Sustainable Ag Expo! Continuing a Legacy of Learning Vineyard Team proudly announces the selection of six new exceptional recipients of the Juan Nevarez Memorial Scholarship, continuing its mission of investing in higher education for the children of California's vineyard and winery workers. These students are set to embark on a transformative journey. This year's recipients, all first-generation college students, have been chosen for their academic achievements, financial need, inspiring stories, community involvement, and the potential to make significant contributions to their communities . Among them are a future viticulturist with a commitment to sustainable agriculture, a budding real estate developer with aspirations of owning their own farm one day, and a prospective legislator/politician, passionate about public policy and social justice. Embracing Change: Scholar Story
Embracing Change Juan Nevarez Memorial Scholarship recipient, Lizbeth, had a meticulously laid out her plan to become a nurse. After years of studying and testing, she completed her pre-nursing at Cuesta Community College and was ready to transfer to a nursing program to complete her credentials. Everything was going as she planned until she was waitlisted in the heavily impacted healthcare educational system. Recovering from her disappointment, Lizbeth took a step back to evaluate her next steps. She knew that while starting a nursing program was on pause, her path to achieving her dreams didn’t have to be. Lizbeth is implementing a multi-tiered plan of action. While she waits for her acceptance into the program, she continues college part-time and works as a phlebotomist technician. She strengthened her admission resume with the help of her pre-health advisor at Cuesta and her Scholarship Mentor, Alex. As a backup plan to her school of choice, she has submitted an application

Robert Alex Scott Memorial Scholarship
Please join us in remembering our beloved colleague and team member as we announce the Robert Alex Scott Memorial Scholarship.  The Robert Alex Scott Scholarship benefits current entry-level vineyard or winery workers, their children and spouses/partners studying for a certificate and/or an associate degree in viticulture and/or enology at Napa Valley College, Santa Rosa Junior College, Allan Hancock College, Cuesta College, Walla Walla Community College or Umpqua Community College. The scholarship is geared toward individuals seeking skills that will allow them to advance above entry-level positions in viticulture and enology. Each grant is worth $6,000-$10,000 and is geared toward individuals seeking skills that will allow them to advance above entry-level positions in viticulture and enology.  The scholarship will be offered through the Napa Valley Communication Foundation.
