Bold looks. Smarter bottles. 2025’s ‘Bottles of the Year’ are must-see packaging designs.

Amcor’s annual reveal highlights how consumer insights drive new concepts in package design.

Assorted beverage containers on reflective surface

Amcor, a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, announced its 2025 Bottles of the Year, in celebration of National Packaging Design Day. Annually, Amcor Rigid Packaging Bottles of the Year recognizes the best in innovative and responsible conceptual packaging designs that meet the latest trends in consumer preferences in the beverage, spirits & wine, food & dairy, home & personal care and healthcare segments.

“The Bottles of the Year program celebrates the best in packaging design,” said Terry Patcheak, Vice President of R&D, Sustainability and Project Management at Amcor Rigid Packaging. “Our designers are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with packaging, and we are proud to highlight that thinking through this program. With Bottles of the Year, our goal is to illustrate how evolving consumer trends and the latest technology in PET plastic packaging can drive advancements in eye-catching designs, improved consumer experience and responsible packaging choices that meet new minimum PCR standards.”

A collection of five bottle designs, the Bottles of the Year are ready to be refined for commercialization. The designs highlight stand-out innovative packaging opportunities for brands in the beverage, spirits & wine, food & dairy, home & personal care, and healthcare markets.

“The bottles featured in this year’s release were designed to address some of the most pressing customer and consumer concerns,” Patcheak added. “For example, the bottle designed for the home and beauty segment addresses consumer concerns about single-use, disposable packaging by creating a package featuring refillable pods. Our healthcare bottle highlights consumer empowerment and the comforts of home with a contemporary take on apothecary bottles.”

Consumer Trends Shaping the Bottles of the Year

In addition to the specific design attributes, this year’s bottles were designed to align with the following consumer-focused packaging trends*:

  • Modern nostalgia: Vintage shapes and branding meet modern performance in a blend of emotional storytelling and responsible design. This trend sees iconic packaging styles return with improved materials, functionality and recyclability, satisfying both sentiment and sustainability. Bottles channel heritage branding while improving shelf impact and supporting circular economy goals. Our Healthcare Bottle of the Year has an aesthetic appeal and nostalgic design that provides a feeling of comfort and familiarity to consumers. And our Food Bottle of the Year provides the intuitive functional aesthetic consumers value.
  • Portable meets premium: Consumers expect their products to go where they go, and this packaging trend is designed for how people move, with durable, lightweight and easy to use on the go formats. It’s a trend that delivers premium feel and portability with no sacrifice in brand feel, product protection or environmental responsibility. Our Health and Beauty Bottle of the Year highlights sustainability, reusability and positive change in an elegant, high-end aesthetic.
  • Clear is credible: With a clean aesthetic that reflects the values behind the product, this packaging trend is simple, straightforward and free of unnecessary distractions. It emphasizes streamlined packaging that mirrors a brand’s commitment to transparency and quality. Our Spirits & Wine Bottle of the Year updates the traditional RTD aluminium can with a lightweight, shatterproof, portable and customizable package that’s ideal for cocktails-to-go and festivals. And our Beverage Bottle of the Year highlights personalization and reusability with refillable powders and sachets.

The bottle designs featured in the Bottles of the Year program are the result of cross-functional collaboration among marketing, industrial design from our in-house design studio, ScorCreativeTM and product development. Individuals from these teams come together to fuse their cutting-edge ideas into innovative concepts that break through traditional norms, reaffirming Amcor as the industry leader in packaging innovation.

ESSENTIELLE: The Plastic-Free Foil Redefining Sustainable Elegance

ESSENTIELLE: The Plastic-Free Foil Redefining Sustainable Elegance

As sustainability becomes a driving force in the wine and spirits industry, producers are seeking packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact without compromising on quality or appearance. Enter ESSENTIELLE - a groundbreaking, plastic-free foil developed by Amcor Capsules that sets a new benchmark in eco-responsible capsule design.

A New Composition with Lower Impact

ESSENTIELLE is made from 66% aluminium and 32% paper, with the remaining 2% comprising inks and aqueous adhesive. This innovative combination brings together the aesthetic and protective qualities of aluminium with the reduced carbon footprint of paper, resulting in a solution that is both elegant and environmentally responsible.

Compared to standard complex foils, ESSENTIELLE delivers a 31% reduction in carbon footprint by replacing plastic with paper and utilizing recyclable materials. The aluminium component also contributes to recyclability, particularly when paired with glass recycling, as validated by the TREE tool developed by CITEO.

Part of a Bigger Sustainability Commitment

ESSENTIELLE is a key advancement within Amcor Capsules’ TRANSPARENCE program, a global sustainability initiative launched in July 2023. TRANSPARENCE is designed to reduce the environmental impact of Amcor’s product portfolio through continuous innovation and material circularity. Through this program, Amcor Capsules has already:

  • Integrated over 90% recycled tin into capsules and sparkling foils

  • Incorporated up to 46% recycled aluminium in screw caps for still wine and spirits

ESSENTIELLE expands on these commitments by providing a viable, lower-impact alternative for premium wines and sparkling labels.

Meeting the Needs of Champagne and Sparkling Wine Producers

In particular, ESSENTIELLE addresses the growing demand from the Champagne and sparkling wine sector for more responsible and future-focused packaging solutions. Its recyclability, premium finish, and lower environmental footprint make it ideally suited for producers navigating new sustainability targets without compromising heritage or brand prestige.

With ESSENTIELLE, Amcor Capsules continues to lead the evolution of wine and spirits packaging—combining style, functionality, and sustainability in one powerful solution.

STELVIN® Screw Cap Sustainable Makeover for a Greener Future

In 1964, the wine industry was transformed by the launch of STELVIN®—the first-ever screw cap designed specifically for wine. Now, 60 years later, Amcor Capsules is once again leading the way with a major innovation: a greener version of the iconic STELVIN® cap that significantly reduces its carbon footprint.

Lower Emissions, Same Trusted Quality

The new STELVIN® screw cap is the first low-carbon emission aluminum wine cap on the market. Through the integration of up to 46% recycled aluminum and the use of certified low-carbon primary aluminum, the production of each cap now emits up to 35% less carbon than a standard screw cap made with traditional European aluminum sheets.

This step forward is independently verified and reflects Amcor Capsules' broader sustainability mission.

Sustainable Options Go Even Further

Brands seeking additional environmental benefits can now choose the PVDC-free STELVIN® INSIDE liner, offering a more eco-conscious alternative without compromising performance.

The greener STELVIN® cap is now available across Europe, North America, and South America for both wine and spirits brands, and applies to all 30H60 screw caps produced in those regions.

Part of the TRANSPARENCE Program

This product upgrade is a key milestone within Amcor Capsules’ TRANSPARENCE program, launched in 2023 to drive continuous sustainability improvements throughout the wine and spirits industry supply chain.

“We were the market pioneers in 1964 with the launch of the first screw cap for wine,” says Yannick Magnon, General Manager of Amcor Capsules. “Since then, STELVIN® has set the standard for both quality and sustainability. This new evolution helps our customers meet their environmental goals while continuing to deliver top-tier performance.”

A Step Toward Net Zero

The new STELVIN® development aligns with Amcor’s larger climate commitments under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aiming to reach net zero emissions by 2050. It also underscores the company’s dedication to increasing the use of recycled materials and reducing the environmental impact of packaging at scale.

Amcor Capsules and Moët & Chandon Go to What Is Truly “Essentielle” with a Plastic-Free Foil Made of Aluminium and Paper

Zurich, June 3 - Amcor Capsules – the market leader specializing in the design and manufacture of capsules, closures, and eco-responsible foils for still wines, sparkling wines, and spirits – is preparing to launch ESSENTIELLE, a plastic-free foil made of aluminium and paper, in October 2024.

With more than 280 years of history, Moët & Chandon, owned by LVMH, manages the largest vineyard in Champagne, with nearly 1,300 hectares of vines. The brand intends to continue its movement towards more sustainable packaging and is working with Amcor Capsules on the development and launch of its plastic-free foil.

AN INNOVATIVE AND ECO-RESPONSIBLE CREATION

The ESSENTIELLE foil is created using paper made in Europe, a material that has a lower carbon impact than other solutions made of plastic on the market. Indeed, by replacing plastic by paper the carbon footprint of this product is 31%1 lower compared to standard polylaminate foils.

In addition, ESSENTIELLE contains approximately 60% aluminum, a recyclable material which remains unchanged. The recyclability of aluminium is attested by the TREE assessment tool by CITEO², when combined with glass recycling in France. Aluminium also retains the product’s aesthetic properties. It fits the bottle perfectly and can be customized according to market requirements.

A key element of this innovation is that Amcor Capsules guarantees that its customers bottling and packaging process, as well as its productivity is unchanged. And, as the world’s biggest producer of Champagne, with production lines capable of handling more than 12,000 bottles per hour; productivity is a top priority for Moët & Chandon.

“The launch of the ESSENTIELLE plastic-free foil draws attention to the expertise at our Mareuil-sur-Aÿ site, which specializes in the manufacture of foils and is located in the heart of the Champagne region. Amcor Capsules is drawing on ESSENTIELLE to revolutionize the industry by offering a recyclable, plastic-free solution that suits the fast pace of their packaging lines, confirming its major role among wine-growing players, here in Champagne.”

- Yannick Magnon, Managing Director of Amcor Capsules

This innovation takes part in Amcor Capsules’ TRANSPARENCE program that was developed in July 2023 to reduce its environmental impact. TRANSPARENCE has already allowed Amcor Capsules to integrate more than 90% recycled tin in capsules and sparkling foil, as well as incorporating up to 46% recycled aluminum in screw caps for the still wine and spirits’ segment.

ESSENTIELLE also rises to the challenges faced by the world of Champagne and sparkling wine, which is moving towards more responsible solutions.

“At Moët et Chandon, we are proud to support and accelerate innovation within the Champagne sector. For over 10 years, we have been spearheading initiatives to reduce our environmental impact and cut carbon emissions. As such, our products are developed and analyzed to improve their environmental performance. Our goal for 2024 is to take this even further, and working with Amcor Capsules on the ESSENTIELLE foil reflects this commitment.. At Moët et Chandon, we believe we can do great things if we work together. Our collaboration on the ESSENTIELLE project with Amcor Capsules – a leader in its sector and our partner for the 15 years – is evidence of this belief”

- Sibylle Scherer, President, CEO Maison Moët

The ESSENTIELLE foil will be produced at the Mareuil-sur-Aÿ site in Champagne from October 2024. Initially, the solution will only be available with texturing (standard or customizable) to allow sparkling wine players to retain the premium look of their bottles and the productivity of their packaging lines. The ESSENTIELLE foil with a smooth finish will be available during the first quarter of 2025.

1 Comparison based on a comprehensive “cradle to grave” life-cycle analysis of basic packaging (standard APA structure: aluminum/PE/aluminum: 12/60/12 or 76 microns of caliber 34x122 – 4°22) compared to the suggested packaging (aluminum and paper structure in caliber 34x122 – 4°22) assuming 100% mechanical recycling for the aluminum part and 100% incineration with energy recovery for the other components – in both cases. Carried out using our ASSET Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool, verified by Carbon Trust.

2 TREE is a recyclability-assessment tool designed by Citeo and is available on the customer portal.

Citeo is a French organization with a social and environmental purpose (entreprise à mission) and was created so that companies in the consumer goods and distribution sector could reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and paper by offering them reduction, reuse, sorting and recycling solutions.

Amcor Capsules Announces Strategic Shift to Adopt Over 90% Recycled Tin into Its Premium Tin Capsules for Wine, Spirits and Sparkling Foils

The strategic move - away from primary content and towards using recycled tin - helps Amcor Capsules deliver its vision for a more responsible wine and spirits packaging industry

Zurich, Switzerland, 7 May 2024: Amcor Capsules, a global leader in developing and producing responsible closures and capsules for wine and spirits, today announces a strategic shift by introducing more than 90% recycled tin into its premium tin capsules and sparkling foils range.

When it comes to sustainability, Amcor Capsules continues to be at the forefront of innovation on the wine and spirits market by introducing tin capsules with an unprecedented level of recycled content sourced from Europe. Indeed, Amcor Capsules has now established sourcing schemes that will enable the company to use recycled tin from end-of-life products, such as car radiators and batteries, ship propellers and bronze scraps from ornaments or statues. After recycling, the tin material is adapted and re-used for capsules and capping purposes.

This strategic shift has been effective since mid-April 2024 and assures customers that Amcor Capsules’ premium tin product contributes to a more local and circular economy. The integration of pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled tin does not change the production process nor the lead time and quality of the final products, ensuring consistency for our customers.

The integration of recycled content into its tin capsules and sparkling foils enables Amcor Capsules to reduce the carbon emissions of its product by up to 70%¹ (cradle to gate), with a certified level of GHG emissions reduced to 1.6 tons of CO2e per ton of tin, in comparison with the global average at 6.6 tons2 of CO2e per ton of tin.

In addition, Amcor Capsules can confirm that tin products are recyclable, and has received a certificate from Institute Cyclos-HTP, an independent third party that confirms a recyclability of 99%3 for tin capsule in countries where the capsules can be recycled through both glass and metal recycling streams and 60%4  in countries where metal collection and sorting cannot be assumed as predominant.

This shift towards recycled material addresses a key requirement in the wine and spirits market: the demand for high-quality tin capsules that make no compromise between premium design and more sustainable packaging solutions.

At Amcor Capsules, we’re proud of our continuous innovation,” says Bertrand Daru, Sustainability Director for Amcor Capsules. “This strategic shift means that our customers benefit from the same premium caps and sparkling foils, but with a more sustainable profile that supports their own environmental targets. After successfully integrating recycled content into our screw cap range, we are proud to extend this innovation to the tin segment of our portfolio”.

Amcor Capsules’ integration of more than 90% recycled tin aligns with our sustainability and B-Corp goals as a company,” says Chris Holman, General Manager of cork and packaging at Scott Laboratories. “We are proud to partner with companies such as Amcor Capsules, making our products a clear choice for customers who share the same conscience about sustainability as us. With Scott Labs offering the best-in-class packaging solutions, Amcor Capsules’ product helps our customers to reach their sustainability goals. It’s a win-win!”

This strategic shift is the latest advancement made by Amcor Capsules to enhance its sustainability progress. The integration of more than 90% recycled tin for wine and spirits capsules supports the company’s TRANSPARENCE program. This newest development supports the REDUCE pillar of the program by reducing both the use of virgin materials, as well as the product’s carbon emissions.

More broadly, the move aligns with the Amcor Group’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 (SBTi commitment), and the company’s sustainability pledge to have all products designed to be recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Amcor Capsules to Inaugurate New North American Production Facility and Bring Greater Capacity and Sustainability to the Wine And Spirits Industry

Amcor Capsules’ investment in new state-of-the-art plant in Québec, Canada, will increase production capacity to address wine & spirits customer’s growth in North America

Zurich, Switzerland, 04 April 2024: Amcor Capsules, a global leader in developing and producing responsible closures and capsules for wine and spirits brands, today announced the opening of its new plant in Granby, Quebec, which is expected to begin commercial operations in early April 2024.

The new production facility in Granby, located just 20 kilometers from Amcor Capsules’ current facility in St. Cesaire, reinforces Amcor’s long-standing presence in North America dating back over 30 years. It marks a significant milestone in the company's commitment to providing North American customers with local solutions to support their growth.

Its strategic location not only enhances the supply chain, enabling efficient local North American distribution, but also facilitates improved service to customers and reduced supply lead times. With its integrated supply chain approach, the Granby plant exemplifies Amcor Capsules’ dedication to delivering excellence in every aspect of its operations.

The new Granby plant, spanning over 100,000 square feet, represents a significant leap forward for Amcor Capsules in its commitment to providing premium quality closures and capsules. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive camera systems, this facility also ensures meticulous quality checks throughout the production process.

"We are thrilled to inaugurate our new plant in Granby, Quebec, which underscores our unwavering dedication to providing exceptional service and quality to our customers," said Patrice Rigaud, Plant General Manager St Cesaire & Granby. "This new plant will not only significantly expand our production capacity, but also reaffirm our commitment to provide the best screwcap design, expertise and production capabilities in North America, delivering constant high quality and service standards."

In line with Amcor Capsules’ sustainability engagement, the Granby plant operates entirely on renewable energy, leveraging Quebec's hydropower which accounts for 100% of the province's electricity. Furthermore, the plant will be producing the company’s greener version of its market leading STELVIN® aluminium screwcap range, which was announced in October 2023 and offers a reduced carbon footprint by up to 35%1. The reduction in carbon emissions will also benefit spirits brand owners ordering 30x60mm screwcaps from Amcor Capsules. This commitment to environmental responsibility underscores the company’s mission to move towards a more sustainable future while meeting customer demands.

“The investment in our new facility in Granby is a testament to our commitment to providing cutting-edge screwcap solutions that exceed customer expectations," said Yannick Magnon, General Manager Amcor Capsules. "We are confident that this expansion will not only enhance our operational capabilities but also contribute to the overall satisfaction of our valued customers."

Pioneer Screw Cap for Wine Brand - STELVIN® - Celebrates Its 60-year Anniversary

Amcor’s STELVIN® range was the first screw cap for wine when it was launched in 1964

The market pioneer continues to pave the way in providing winemakers with more sustainable choices

Zurich, Switzerland, 20 March 2024: Amcor Capsules, a global leader in developing and producing responsible closures and capsules for wine and spirits brands, celebrates the 60th anniversary of its pioneering STELVIN® aluminum screw cap range for wine.

The development of STELVIN® in 1964 in Chalon-sur-Saône, France, marked a significant milestone in the wine industry. At a time when there were no screw cap alternatives available in the market, the concept of STELVIN® was first pioneered to address challenges faced by the Swiss grape variety Chasselas, which is known for its sensitivity to cork taint. The STELVIN® mechanical system played a crucial role in this achievement, providing a solution that preserves the wine's aromas, its freshness, taste and quality, while providing optimal preservation.

Switzerland was the first country to adopt STELVIN® for its wine and spirit brands. Since then, the brand has gained momentum in other key markets. In 2001, ‘The Screwcap Initiative’ was established in New Zealand to widespread the use of screw caps as a wine bottle closure method instead of corks. The initiative represented a major movement for the wine industry, resulting in 90% of wine bottles in Australia and New Zealand using screw caps today.

Screw caps are now widely accepted, even in traditional markets. As the inventor of screw caps, STELVIN® has played a major role in this acceptance and widespread use - today one out of three bottles are closed with a screw cap, and the brand has expanded its presence to more than 40 countries.

Yannick Magnon, General Manager of Amcor Capsules, says, “We’re delighted to celebrate this 60-year anniversary milestone. When STELVIN® screw cap was invented, we were the first to partner with winemakers to help them swap their methods of bottle closures, which was seen as a revolution at the time. Like all innovators, STELVIN® has been imitated over the years, but its heritage and impact on the wine industry has never been matched. With STELVIN ®, Amcor remains the market leaders for wine screwcaps thanks to the quality we provide as well as the knowledge and expertise of our teams.”

STELVIN® has been committed to help wine brands progress further in their sustainability journey. Last October, Amcor Capsules revealed that its entire STELVIN® 30H60 aluminium screw cap range for wine and spirits brands now emits up to 35% less carbon emissions compared to a standard screw cap produced with European aluminium sheets1.

Moreover, STELVIN® has always adapted to the needs of the market, from functional capabilities to offering various designs such as STELVIN® LUX, a closure without external threading. Additionally, STELVIN® offers STELVIN® INSIDE, a choice of PVDC FREE liners with different oxygen transmission rates (OTR) for winemakers to select from, all while maintaining a premium quality.

After 60 years, STELVIN® remains the market reference, according to customers like Laroche that first started to use STELVIN® in 2003: “When it comes to screw caps, STELVIN® is a benchmark for Laroche” declares Florence Chamon, Head of Quality for Laroche in Chablis and Béziers.

Géraud Blanc, Wine Manager at the La Chevalière site in Béziers and Romain Chevrolat, Wine Managers at Domaine Laroche, adds: “Laroche has a long-standing partnership with Amcor and its STELVIN®, with a commitment to innovation and wine quality. We use STELVIN® on some wine ranges: our varietal wines, Bourgogne, and villages such as Petit Chablis and Chablis. Nowadays, the screw cap is used on part of our Chablis range for export markets and 98% of our varietals.

Amcor Capsules' celebration of the 60th anniversary of STELVIN® is not only a reflection of its rich history and lingering success, but also a testament to its continuous efforts in innovation, sustainability, and meeting the evolving needs of the market.
