Sonoma State University’s (SSU) Wine Business Institute (WBI) announces the launch of A Report on the Wine Industry Today, offering a fresh perspective on the current landscape, the opportunities and the challenges facing wine industry leaders in 2023. Faculty contributors to the inaugural issue include Economics Professors Chong Kim and Rob Eyler along with Wine Business Professor InHaeng Jung. Virtual event sees an 81 percent increase in attendees from 2019 Sonoma County, California – On July 15th, executives from wineries throughout California, from Antica Napa Valley in the north to Zaca Mesa in the south, joined the virtual Research Summit. The program featured Sonoma State University faculty and representatives from close stakeholders of the Wine Business Institute, including Rabo AgriFinance, Wine.com, Jackson Family Wines, and BPM. The 2020 Southern Hemisphere harvests are underway and lack of water is a concern in Australia, Argentina and Chile. The incredibly high temperatures and bushfires of the Australian summer have been well-documented, while a precipitation shortfall in Mendoza – combined with restricted funds for vineyard work due to the nation’s economic woes – is expected to have an impact on Argentina’s final volumes. Chile’s growing areas, meanwhile, are also in longstanding drought and a recent proliferation in deep well installation – in the hunt for water – has led to a shortage of the requisite piping. Conversely, the Western Cape has been experiencing its most straightforward growing season of recent years, with water stocks good and vineyards looking healthy.
