What Is a Brand, Really? (And Why Yours Might Need a Little Therapy)
The word “brand” is notoriously difficult to define in marketing. If we were talking about a ranch brand—the kind seared onto livestock to signify ownership—that’s easy to understand. But in marketing, a brand is not a physical thing. It’s a symbolic construct. It’s not the label on the bottle or the winery’s logo or even the product itself. Rather, it’s the entire perception a consumer holds in their mind about your company, your wine, your people, and everything you collectively represent. A brand is a conceptual identity that differentiates you from your competitors. It can be shaped by your name, your origin story, the design of your label, the personalities involved in your winery, your tasting room experience, your packaging, your email tone, your partnerships, or even how you respond to a customer complaint. All these elements come together to form the intangible yet powerful idea of your brand. It is, quite literally, eve

Obtaining Local Approval for ABC Type 93 Estate Tasting Events in Napa County
This blog post summarizes the process by which licensed wineries can obtain local government approval for events in Napa County held pursuant to their California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (“ABC”) Type 93 Estate Tasting Permit. As discussed in our prior post, last year Governor Newsom signed into law AB720, granting California wineries that hold an ABC Type 02 winery license the ability to host events, up to 36 times per year, where they exercise tasting room privileges for wine manufactured by or for the winery on either: (1) property adjacent to the licensed premises or (2) a nonadjacent vineyard provided that such property or vineyard is owned by or under the control of the winery. (Cal. Bus. Prof. Code 23399.03.) Neither ABC nor Napa County have provided guidance as to what degree or proof of “control” is required. Under AB 720, these new Type 93 estate tasting events are also subject to local land use controls that can “restrict, but no

Before you dive into the details, here are the nine questions every winery owner should be asking. These will help you focus on key issues and quickly determine if you are getting the information you need to make timely decisions about your winery.  The Questions Are we capitalizing the right costs into inventory? Are we using the correct method for tax and book inventory? Are we taking advantage of all the tax benefits available to wineries? Do we understand our gross margin by sales channel? How are we tracking wine losses and blends? When are we recognizing revenue and expenses? Does our chart of accounts reflect how a winery operates? Do our systems support accurate, timely reporting? Are we showing this year’s vintage costs on the P&L without overstating expenses? Full Article Winery accounting is different, some might even say complicated (or worse.) If your internal team or outside CPA is treating your winery like a typical product business, you could be missing c

This Energy Upgrade Could Save Your Winery Thousands
In the wine industry, operational reliability, energy efficiency, and sustainability aren't just buzzwords—they’re necessities. Whether it’s keeping fermentation tanks at precise temperatures, fueling equipment in remote vineyards, or ensuring production doesn’t stop during blackouts, propane has quietly become a critical tool for modern wineries. And no one understands this better than Blue Star Gas. Why Propane Makes Sense for Wineries Wineries have unique energy needs. Many are located off the beaten path, where access to natural gas is limited or unreliable. Others face seasonal demands, requiring scalable energy solutions that can adapt as production ramps up. Propane checks all the boxes: Reliable Energy – Propane systems offer consistent power without dependence on aging electrical infrastructure. Lower Operating Costs – Propane appliances are energy-efficient, reducing fuel usage and utility bills over time. Environmental Benefits &ndash

Irrigation Precision During Veraison: How Napa Growers Are Leveraging Real-Time Data to Shape Their Vintage
As summer unfolds across Napa Valley, vineyards are entering veraison, shifting their focus from growth to sugar accumulation and flavor development. For winegrowers, this period marks a delicate balancing act: providing just enough water to support berry development while inducing the mild stress that concentrates flavors and enhances wine quality. Historically, irrigation decisions during veraison have relied on experience, visual cues, and sometimes educated guesswork. But with water becoming an increasingly precious resource and quality standards higher than ever, Napa growers are turning to precision irrigation tools that offer deeper insights and control. Why Veraison Demands Precision During veraison, the vine’s water needs become more nuanced. Over-irrigation can dilute berry flavors and increase canopy growth, leading to shading and higher disease pressure. Under-irrigation, on the other hand, risks stalling berry development and causing uneven ripening. This fine line r
