Let’s look at some maps Last week I was in the middle of writing a post about how great this year was turning out. I thought, just as long as growers can avoid something disastrous, this could be a great vintage. Within 24 hours, the Pickett fire grew from a small blaze north of Calistoga to a towering wildfire that has since consumed 6000 acres. Of course, this comes on the heels of the Gifford fire in San Luis Obispo, which has taken out over 100k acres the week before. For some growers in Napa and Edna valley, harvest may be over before it starts. While the definitive kibosh will come from lab analysis, knowing how smokey it got and when is useful for metering expectations and determining the next step. And there are some super useful tools out there! The EPA has a wide network of air quality sensors throughout the country with varying degrees of concentration. The map below shows just how many of these stations are publicly available, so you can see where air quality is suffe

"GROUNDWATER . You can't see it, but millions of Californians depend upon it as a vital source of water for their homes and businesses." Those are not my words but the introductory words for the promotional video that appears on the SGMA (Sustainable Groundwater Management Act) website1 . The statement is a rather simply worded way to convey the obvious: that groundwater is vital to our livelihood here in California, and especially important to honoring and sustaining our agricultural heritage. While groundwater provides needed sustenance for numerous rural, as well as urban communities, it is agriculture that demands the lion's share of the resource. Central Valley agriculture turns to groundwater pumping whenever drought or poor rainfall years reduce the availability of surface water deliveries. Cries for construction of more reservoirs to capture and store more stormwater and snowmelt so that canals can be filled with more water are always being heard. Yet, apart f

February 9, 2024 – Novato, CA – The California Department of Food and Agriculture Preliminary Grape Crush Report, containing tons crushed and prices of wine grapes sold during the 2023 harvest, has been released. The Crush Report provides growers and wineries insight into the inventory position of the California wine business as a whole and influences market dynamics for the current bulk wine market and grape market. The 2023 Crush Report, coming in at a total of 3.6 million tons, fails to capture the full story of the 2023 harvest. The crop would have been considerably larger if not for soft demand and disease pressure that caused some acres to go unharvested. Despite the size of the overall crop, most wineries found themselves with an excess supply amid challenging conditions in consumer sales. For specific details on 2023 harvest, see below: Key Insights by Region Tons Crushed 2023 Tons Crushed 2022 Net Gain/Loss Equivalent Gallons

After two years representing Bucher Vaslin North America (B.V.N.A.) in Mexico, Lea Gresillon moved to San Luis Obispo in June 2022. With a viticulturist grandfather from Loire who has always taught her that everything begins with the land, Lea was bound to focus her interest and her career on Agronomy and the Food Industry. After graduating with an International Master of Winemaking and Viticulture, Lea worked as a cellar hand, lab enologist, assistant winemaker, and consultant at Château Smith Haut Lafitte (Bordeaux), Santo Tomas (Baja California), Bodega Lurton (Baja California), and Bruma Vinicola (Baja California). After four harvests in Mexico, Lea decided to join Bucher Vaslin North America (B.V.N.A.) in 2021 to focus on developing and supporting the brands represented by B.V.N.A. in the expanding Mexican wine market.
