Wine filtration addresses unappealing murkiness or deposits, a process that goes back to the origin of wine. Over the centuries, the means of filtration have evolved from fabrics to industrial filters to sedimentation, filtration plates, and membranes. Conventional filtration moves the juice or wine perpendicularly through the filter. This transversal filtration leads to the accumulation or caking of microorganisms and particles that result in cloudiness on the filter, which increases hydraulic resistance and reduces output volume. Bucher Vaslin, a producer of high-end winery processing equipment sold worldwide, recently introduced the latest iteration of its cross-flow filtration machinery, the Flavy X-Treme 3-in-1. This innovative and unique machine allows winemakers to filter wine, juice lees, and wine lees in a single machine. Additionally, it recovers a significant portion of previously wasted lees, increasing the quantity of saleable wine. Utilizing these recovered lees, cross-

The global bulk wine market was largely quiet over the past month, with only Chile and Spain reporting steady activity. Prices in these two markets have risen in recent months in response to their respective shorter harvests and healthier – or at least perceptions of healthier – demand versus last year. Generic white wine is in tightest supply; this item and varietal whites spearhead demand, and the campaign for Spain’s 2024 whites is likely to commence quickly. An uptick in buyer enquiries has continued in California, potentially due to prices softening as the new crop nears, but only some of this activity has so far translated into deals. The market is entering its traditional lull while the Northern Hemisphere enjoys its summer holidays. Current vineyard conditions suggest the overall crops in California, France and Spain are on track to be at least in the vicinity of their averages; only Italy – at the time of writing – is a concern, experiencing

JUNE 28, 2024 – Winners have been announced in the 17th annual Women’s International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWWSC). The competition, which took place June 10-12 in Santa Rosa, Calif., was founded on the premise that the majority of wine purchased for home consumption is bought by women. The IWWSC judging panels consist entirely of professional women in the wine and spirits industries — winemakers, distillers, marketers, buyers, sommeliers, educators and journalists. “As always, the International Women’s Wine & Spirits Competition shined a spotlight on hundreds of deserving wines,” says Debra Del Fiorentino, owner of Wine Competitions Management & Production, which organizes and presents IWWSC. “And even though entry is open to all winemakers regardless of gender, I found it gratifying that six of this year’s sweepstakes wines were created by women. And our overall wine winner also was named Best Woman Winemaker

The global bulk wine market reaches the midway point of 2024 with activity levels ostensibly healthier than they were at the same stage of last year. This is owed largely to two factors: generic white wine is in something of a supply-demand balance, globally-speaking, following the short 2023 harvests in Italy and Spain and 2024 harvests in Chile and South Africa; and removal, in March, of China’s punitive import tariffs on Australian wines has quickly rejuvenated Australia’s red wine shipments. Beyond this, the global bulk market lacks a unifying good news story. Chile is enjoying a genuine rebound in international demand after a sharp drop in 2023: its bulk wine shipments were up 21.48% in January-April versus the first four months of last year, when they were down 18.9%. But Argentina, France and South Africa continue to see shrinking export sales, Californian pricing is softening as US retailer/distributor need remains limited, and activity in Europe beyond generi

Vineyards challenge grape growers with variations in soil type, elevation, and variety. Grape growers respond by compensating for weak spots that hamper vine vigor and delay the ripening. To accomplish this, they often rely on practices like regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and tools like automation. RDI limits the timing and amount of water applied, thus managing berry size and fruit concentration to control the organoleptic precursors in the grapes. Automated irrigation systems help growers save on labor costs and water consumption. However, applying deficit irrigation below the block level hasn’t been possible in a systematic, affordable way. Verdi’s variable rate irrigation system installed on a vineyard in California. However, the newly launched Verdi has invented a way to accomplish just that. With past experience researching precision agriculture with Google, Verdi’s co-founders have developed the first commercially-viable technology for variable rate i
