The right tools can make a winemaker's job easier and craft a better product. But staying abreast of technological advancements takes time, and testing alternative tools requires repetition to build confidence in the results. Perhaps that’s why so many winemakers rely on the winemaking community for recommendations on new ways to process grapes and create wines. McFinn Technologies’ Bowpeller pump has earned a reputation as a superior choice for gently moving juices, especially during pump overs. Its modern design delivers low-shear, non-disruptive juice handling that minimizes damage to skins and seeds, helping to avoid harsh tannin extraction or oxidation and improving wine quality. Bowpeller pump at Duckhorn's Goldeneye winery “A standard centrifugal pump has blades that slap the liquid and make it change direction by 90 degrees and a casing that allows damaging re-circulation,” says John McGinn, co-owner of McFinn Technologies. “The design

The fog along the California coast is alive — it flows from the Pacific Ocean up through passes in the protective coastal ranges and into the valleys like a tide. It rises into the hills and breathes before slowly receding to the valley floors and retreating through the mountains, across the sands and into the ocean waters. Toward the north, these fogs nurture the redwoods, and all along the coast, they provide relief from hot daytime temperatures for many wine country vineyards. The Niner Estate vineyards are near Paso Robles, about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean. They are protected from the cold maritime winds by the Santa Lucia mountain range that parallels the coastline. One of the valleys the fog creeps through is the nearby Templeton Gap. For over a decade, Niner Wine Estates’ winemaker Patrick Muran has been crafting the Fog Catcher Bordeaux blend that he says is “named after the cool banks of fog we often see drifting over our vineyards on early mornings in

RFMCO is exhibiting at the first virtual Sacramento Unified Wine Symposium, which is the largest wine and grape conference in the nation. Each year, RFMCO showcases our product strengths at the Unified Wine Symposium with new case studies and industry improvements. Hot water in the winemaking process is used primarily for cleaning and sterilization but is also used to clean floors and winemaking equipment such as barrels, tanks and pumps. Cleaver-Brooks and Camus boilers manufacturers offer clean and environmentally friendly gas-fired and electric boilers known for low-cost operation and low (or no) NOx/sulfide pollution. RFMCO specializes in complete skid packaged systems for the wine and beverage industry, including boilers, pumps, heat exchangers and control valves delivered on a pre-piped, pre-wired fully assemble system. While boilers are important, pumps are needed to move wine through the winemaking process. RFMCO offers Boerger and Seepex pumps as the leading industry pumps fo

Quite often when I'm discussing a new pump with a customer, I hear some variation of the following concern: "I've heard that impeller pumps will beat up my wine". There's a lot to unpack in this phrase, so let's get down to it.
What's In an Impeller?
The first consideration here is what is meant by "impeller pump". This, I think, is where the confusion starts. Both Flexible Impeller pumps and Centrifugal Pumps are often called "impeller pumps" because they use an impeller to convert the rotation of a motor into energy that pushes liquid forward. Beyond that similarity, they are very different.
While many facilities—particularly breweries—use centrifugal impeller pumps, they are typically avoided for wine transfer, except in cases where budget is a big concern (impeller pumps are relatively cheap), or some shear isn't expected to have any perceptible effect on the final product.
Flexible Impeller pumps, on the

Kirkland, WA – September 22, 2020 Pulsair Systems, Inc. today announces the release of the new micro-cap management equipment.
Micro-cap management and mixing
Improve infusion of phenolics during primary red wine fermentation and make life easier for the winemaking team using the large bubble, macro-oxygenation process from Pulsair.
Pulsair Systems officially releases the portable TM-1501W Kit for any winemakers who ferments in small barrels and 1-2 ton tank bins. The wine air mixing process from Pulsair is an easy-to-use, all-pneumatic process that allows winemakers to quickly incorporate fermenting red wine juice up into the buoyant grape cap. Sometimes referred to as a ‘reverse punch-down’, large compressed air bubbles are sequentially release under the cap to initiate the mixing. The big bubbles pull the wine juice up into, through and over the top of the cap to break up the cap into individually berries and immerse the skins in the juice. By completely mixing
