Last month we had the great pleasure to present posters about our new tannin methods at ASEV with our partners, BioSystems. Our first poster highlights an optimized multiple linear regression model that uses automated testing to predict tannin levels in wine. The research was done in labs in four countries using multiple grape varietals throughout the stages of winemaking. By combining machine learning with SPICA’s advanced analysis tools, it offers a fast and simple way to ensure consistent wine quality. Our second poster describes an alternative to tannin precipitation by Mexthylcellulose (MCP) in wine. While traditional methods take a great deal of time to prepare the reagents, our MCP kit is ready to use out of the box with an 18 month shelf life and provides fast and reliable results on the SPICA automated platform. Congratulations to Marilyn Garcia, José Morales Ariza, Leonardo Estrada Dueñas, and Andreu Tobeña Montanuy for the completion of these

Winemaking Inventor Vijay Singh Has Revolutionized Small Wineries! Clark Smith explains how Vijay Singh has made his and other small winemakers' lives better: This master inventor has asked me to send you an email explaining his work. I am delighted to do so because he has eliminated from my life the three most annoying elements of small winery production. Annoyance #1: Nighttime punchdowns. If I punch down my T-bin at 8PM, then eat, sleep, and punch down again at 8AM, a temperature differential of 20°F causes yeast to retool, resulting in H2S stinkiness. With GOfermentor's automatic punchdown feature, I can mix as often as I like. I can even leave town for a week and come back to perfect wine. Annoyance #2: Breakdown cooperage. How I hate those kegs and carboys that store partial barrels. Besides their fragility, they are always under foot, and frequently go to vinegar. With SmartBarrels, my partial barrels are stored in a bag-in-the-barrel alongsid

Glass Reimagined: Towards a Carbon-Free Wine Packaging Era Every consumer goods manufacturer has a roadmap to environmentally friendly stewardship, with measurable goals for reducing carbon emissions, using sustainable resources and minimizing waste. With somewhere between 23% and 29% of a winery’s carbon footprint coming from the glass bottle, the challenge for the wine industry is to make the venerable glass bottle more sustainable considering that according to the latest EcoFocus® consumer trend survey, 85 % of American grocery shoppers over the age of 21 choose to buy wine in glass. The Core Value of Recycling Recycling glass bottles is core to a circular packaging economy since recycled bottles are crushed and cleaned to produce cullet, which goes back into the glass furnace to make new bottles. Using this recycled cullet reduces the natural resources and energy needed to produce glass. In fact, increasing cullet to 55% reduces the use
