Following an unseasonably cool spring and start to summer, California received some overdue 100°F+ heat in late June into early July, though unusually mild spells continue to interrupt these hotter periods, particularly in the Coast during the mornings. More normal, consistently hot weather is in the forecast for the rest of summer, but for now the growing season is still running 3-4 weeks behind in many areas of the state, particularly in the Coast. There is talk in the Interior that the season has caught up a little in some areas, to something like 1-2 weeks behind, but the popular barometer of a ‘normal’ timetable – veraison on Lodi Zinfandel by July 4th – was missed, and indeed veraison was not apparent anywhere in the first week of July. Consequently, it remains too early to provide a confident guesstimate of crop size. Berry sizing is underway and cluster numbers in general appear good, although shatter occurred on some varieties in some areas of

Bulk wine pricing around the world is generally in a stable to softening trend as a number of downward pressures on prices offset the upward pressure from elevated input costs: the stop-start nature of buying activity in most markets; some large inventory levels – primarily of reds – in Argentina, Australia, California and France; lower 2023 grape prices in Chile versus 2022; a larger than expected 2023 crop in New Zealand; Rand weakness in South Africa. It should be underlined that buying activity continues, but much of it is for short-term needs, with buyers seeking smaller volumes for quicker loading. The slow nature of most consumer sales channels in most countries has disincentivised the opportunistic buyers who might normally – especially with freight costs greatly reduced and logistics efficiency markedly improved versus a year ago – come into a long market and get creative with new brands. Instead, winery focus is on inventory adjustment, assessing

Webinar on wastewater recovery (recycling and reuse). Tutorial on water filtration technology used in winery industrial wastewater streams and bringing it back in as wash water all the way to zero water discharge. The same technology has been used on a large scale in the municipal wastewater treatment now scaled down for wineries. It can be easily adapted to food and beverage manufacturing as well. In this webinar the California winery general order over wastewater disposal is also covered along with an update.

As we write this it's early August in Sonoma County, and already the calls are coming in: “My grapes are coming soon. I need equipment now”. Although harvest comes at the same time every year, give or take a few weeks, it still seems to catch people off guard. We get it: you're busy with all the other parts of running a winery. We'd like to help by offering our tips on when to buy equipment if you want the best deals, and best delivery times. Much of the world's best winemaking equipment is made in Europe. No slight intended to the patriotic, but they've been making wine in Europe far longer than we have here in the USA. Consequently, when it comes to presses, destemmers, and must pumps, a lot of the equipment we use in American wineries has to journey across the Atlantic the same way the pilgrims did: by ship. Thankfully, the advent of container freight shipping has made things much simpler and much faster — but not that much faster. We still fig

√ WHAT IS THE E2U™ CERTIFICATION? Based the know-how and knowledge of the Lesaffre group, the world's leading yeast producer, Fermentis – the business unit of Lesaffre for beverage fermentation- has developed a specific production and drying process of yeast that confers to them a strong resistance to a wide range of inoculation conditions while preserving their fermentation performances and their aromatic characteristics. Fermentis has been working for 10 years with winemakers to trial its 14 E2U™ certified SafOeno yeasts. To better illustrate what you can expect from E2U™ certified strains, you will find below a case study realized in California on Chardonnay in large scale fermentations. The results presented show that for both yeast pitching conditions tested, rehydration and acclimatization vs direct pitching into the must, the yeast implanted very well, its fermentative performance was maintained and it produced wines of sim

The wine industry is an important contributor to the economy and to employment in California. Left unchecked, process water generated by the wine industry can negatively affect groundwater quality. Previously, permitting statewide was inconsistent, and there were no uniform standards governing the discharge requirements for process water from the wine industry. The State Water Resources Control Board collaborated with the wine industry to develop a General Order pertaining to the discharge requirements for winery process waste that is discharged to land for reuse or disposal. CALIFORNIA WINERY WASTEWATER REGULATIONS On January 20, 2021, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted a Resolution for the California Environmental Quality Act Mitigated Negative Declaration for the Waste Discharge Requirements for Winery Process Water and associated General Order. These wastewater regulations are applicable throughout California. WHY WERE THE REGULATIONS CREATED? The California Stat

They say first impressions last, and that seems never truer than when it comes to the impressions of the JD Edwards Blend module. Issues and shortcomings with the module that were around in the beta and first release of Blend are still raised and commented on today, some 15 or so years later. It appears the first impressions of Blend were shared far and wide in the early days of the module and despite considerable development and improvements since then, they linger as misconceptions today. I will address six of these I hear most often. “There are too many screens and clicks needed” This is perhaps the most common complaint about Blend. And one of the most legitimate complaints off the shelf. However, since the original release, several “speed function” applications have been added to reduce the number of screens and tabs. What Oracle has really done in the last few years, though, is to focus on improving the User Experience by delivering a suite of “pers
