Packaging is the First Touch Point a Consumer Has With Your Brand Whether it’s an experienced consumer or someone buying their very first bottle, the appeal of your product is founded on the use of well considered glass packaging and label design. While these must be authentic to your brand and winery, it is critical to stay up to date with trends in the wine industry. If you want to effectively catch the attention of your target market, you should consider these 5 things about your wine packaging for your upcoming vintage and beyond. This year’s harvest is coming to a close with what appears to be an excellent vintage. However, the wine industry is facing worrisome challenges from a changing marketplace, accentuated by declining consumption, rising production costs and higher interest rates. These factors combine with overabundant past harvests to fuel an oversupply situation exacerbated by bulk grapes being returned to the bulk wine sector as unsold wine. “I think that the industry is pretty darn risk-averse,” says Marc Cuneo, a wine broker and partner at Turrentine Brokerage. “After going out and trying to sell wine from bulk into the consumer retail space and not getting much positive feedback, we’re less likely to see opportunistic buyers putting together 10,000 cases of Sonoma Cabernet from the spot market.” “There’s a lot of excess inventory in the marketplace today, with far too many grapes than the wineries need right now,” agrees Christian Klier,

A year of flat or declining wine sales owing to consumer pessimism draws to a close with bulk markets exhibiting the same slowness they have done throughout the previous eleven months. Transactions are, on most wines in most markets, incremental and price-sensitive, Italy – having experienced a crop size well short of the average, especially in central and southern regions – being the main exception. The leading causes of consumer belt-tightening on discretionary items like wine – grocery price inflation and elevated interest rates – have been trending downward this year but are widely expected to continue making themselves felt in 2024, accentuated by high household debt and banks retreating from business loans and credit card financing. Consumers are keeping a watchful eye on spending, as evidenced by news from the UK that the use of cash – yes, good old-fashioned bank notes and coins – in transactions rose in 2023 for the first time in ten y

As the cellar master of Krug, Julie Cavil has one of the most revered and respected jobs in Champagne. She explains the creative process behind the flagship Grande Cuvée, how Krug evolves over time and how the 2022 vintage is shaping up. How did it feel to become Krug’s first female cellar master? Rather than saying I’m the first female cellar master, I’d simply say I’m the eighth cellar master in the history of the house. It’s my job to perpetuate the dream of the house’s founder, Joseph Krug, each year with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. I’ve been with Krug since 2006 and prior to becoming cellar master, I was winemaking director and a member of the tasting committee alongside former chef de cave Eric Lebel. The transition was seamless for us. I work with an immensely talented team on many projects, which keeps my job interesting. Krug Grande Cuvée is made from a blend of up to 120 wines from more than
