Beyond the Grapes: Protecting Equipment, Storage, and Processing Areas from WildlifeWildlife Challenges Don’t End at the Vineyard Edge
When vineyard managers think about wildlife threats, the focus is almost always on protecting grapes from browsing deer, hungry birds, or burrowing rabbits. But the reality is, animals can—and often do—cause problems well beyond the vines themselves.
From chewing cables to nesting in outbuildings, wildlife can interfere with harvest operations, damage valuable equipment, and even create food safety concerns in processing areas. As harvest season approaches and activity around the winery ramps up, the potential for these issues often increases.

“A lot of managers focus on exclusion fencing for the vineyard blocks, which is critical—but the work doesn’t stop there,” says George Horetsky, senior sales representative for Trident Fence. “If wildlife can access your equipment yard, storage areas, or crush pad, you’ve still got vulnerabilities that can cost time and money.”
The Hidden Risks Wildlife Pose to Winery Operations
1. Cable and Hose Damage—Rodents and small mammals are notorious for chewing through wiring, hoses, and insulation. This can disable harvesters, forklifts, or processing equipment right when they’re needed most.
2. Nesting in Structures—Birds and small animals will take advantage of open sheds, unused equipment, or gaps in storage facilities. Nesting can lead to contamination concerns and costly cleanup.
3. Crush Pad Contamination—Bird droppings or animal waste near processing areas pose both sanitation and regulatory risks. During the busiest weeks of harvest, these hazards can quickly escalate.
4. Stored Product Loss—Wildlife intrusion into storage buildings can damage packaging, supplies, and spare parts.
Why Harvest Season Heightens the Problem
- More open doors and access points during active harvest operations
- Increased food odors from grape processing attract pests from greater distances
- Higher activity at night as animals take advantage of quieter conditions after crews leave
- Seasonal wildlife behavior — deer and other mammals feed heavily in late summer and early fall to prepare for winter
Practical Solutions for Protecting Non-Vineyard Assets
1. Extend Exclusion Zones—Strategically extend fencing around critical equipment yards, storage areas, or processing facilities, not just vineyard rows.
2. Use Targeted Netting—Bird netting over open-sided storage areas or equipment can prevent roosting and nesting.
3. Seal and Secure—Inspect outbuildings, sheds, and storage areas for gaps, holes, or open vents, and install rodent guards or mesh covers.
4. Manage Attractants—Keep processing areas clean and store waste in closed containers to reduce wildlife interest.
5. Seasonal Reinforcements—During harvest, increase inspection frequency for fenced and netted areas.
Thinking Beyond the Grapes
Protecting fruit from wildlife is essential, but so is safeguarding the tools, spaces, and systems that make harvest possible. “Vineyards invest heavily in equipment and facilities,” Horetsky notes. “It’s worth protecting those assets with the same level of care as the crop itself.”

Protecting the Harvest: How Vineyard Netting Helps Growers Safeguard Their GrapesFor vineyard owners, harvest season brings both excitement and anxiety. As grapes ripen and sugar levels climb, they become an irresistible target for birds, deer, raccoons, and other hungry visitors. A single flock of starlings or a few persistent deer can cause significant crop loss — not just in volume, but in quality. For growers working tirelessly all season long, these setbacks can be devastating.

That’s why more and more vineyards are turning to physical deterrents like netting — a simple yet powerful solution that protects the fruit without compromising the vineyard’s aesthetic or farming practices.
At Trident Fence, we’ve worked with growers across the country to provide vineyard netting that’s durable, easy to install, and incredibly effective. Whether you operate a boutique winery or manage acres of vines across varied terrain, netting may be the smartest step you take toward a more secure and profitable harvest.
Why Netting Works for Vineyards
Netting offers a physical barrier between your fruit and the wildlife that would love to enjoy it. Unlike chemical sprays, sound cannons, or visual deterrents — which animals can grow accustomed to or avoid — netting creates a direct obstacle. It stops birds from pecking at ripening grapes and keeps deer and other animals from making their way into the rows.
“Bird pressure can ruin a harvest quickly — especially for varietals that ripen early or unevenly,” said George Horetsky, senior sales representative for Trident Fence, who regularly supports vineyard customers. “Netting gives growers the ability to protect the crop at the most critical point in the season, with minimal labor and long-term use.”
Built for the Vineyard Environment
The vineyard netting solutions offered by Trident Fence are specifically selected to withstand outdoor exposure while remaining lightweight and easy to use. Features include:
UV-resistant material that stands up to sun and weather
Lightweight construction that won’t damage vines or fruit
Customizable lengths and widths for different row configurations
Ease of installation over trellises, hoops, or directly over rows
Reusable design that can last multiple seasons with proper storage
While some vineyards choose full-row coverage for maximum protection, others opt for side netting or targeted bird barriers depending on their threat level and terrain. George and the Trident Fence team help growers determine what setup makes the most sense.
A Smart Fit for Organic and Biodynamic Growers
Many vineyards today are certified organic or follow biodynamic practices — making traditional repellents or chemical sprays off-limits. Physical barriers like netting align perfectly with those standards, providing a reliable solution that doesn’t interfere with farming methods or certifications.
“One of the biggest advantages is that netting doesn’t disrupt your organic program,” George explains. “It’s a clean solution that fits into any sustainable operation, and it doesn’t require heavy machinery or harmful substances. That’s a big win for a lot of our vineyard clients.”
Cost-Effective Protection for Long-Term Returns
It’s easy to underestimate the cost of wildlife damage — until you add it up. Even a small reduction in yield can translate into thousands of dollars lost, especially for premium wines or small-lot production.
Netting provides a relatively low up-front investment with long-term payoff. When stored properly, many of Trident Fence’s netting solutions can be reused for several seasons, making it a smart financial decision as well as a practical one.
“You’re protecting the product you’ve invested all year in,” George adds. “From bud break to veraison to harvest, every step is about quality and consistency. Netting helps make sure that effort doesn’t go to waste.”
Support for Every Vineyard Size
Trident Fence understands that no two vineyards are the same. Whether you’re dealing with rolling hills, irregular plots, or shared land with neighboring properties, our team works with you to identify the best solution. We also understand that not every grower has a full team of installers — which is why our products are designed for easy handling and application.
With nationwide shipping and support, Trident Fence makes it simple for winegrowers across the country to access proven protective solutions — and expert guidance to go with them.
The Bottom Line: Don’t Leave Your Harvest to Chance
Birds and wildlife aren’t going away — and they aren’t going to wait until you’re done harvesting. Netting is a simple, effective way to safeguard your crop, protect your investment, and support your sustainability goals.
If you're looking for dependable vineyard netting backed by a team that understands your industry, reach out to Trident Fence at 866-290-0244 today. We’re ready to help you protect your vines — and your bottom line.

Preventing Deer Damage During Critical Seasons
Deer may be a picturesque sight near vineyards, but their presence can spell trouble for grape growers—especially during critical seasons like ripening. During these times, the sweet aroma of maturing grapes attracts deer, leading to browsing, trampling, and significant yield losses. For vineyard managers, staying ahead of potential damage is essential to protect their crops and ensure a successful harvest.
Why Ripening Seasons Are High-Risk for Vineyards
Deer are opportunistic feeders, and ripening grapes offer a high-sugar, nutrient-rich food source that is hard to resist. During late summer and early fall, when grape clusters are at their peak, deer activity near vineyards increases. This is also when vines are most vulnerable, as browsing can directly reduce yields, damage future growth, and compromise wine quality.
"Deer don’t just take a few bites and move on—they return night after night," says George Horetsky, senior sales representative at Trident Fence. "A single deer can strip a surprising amount of fruit in just one visit, and over time, the damage adds up fast."
Other critical times include spring, when new shoots emerge, and early summer, when deer are actively feeding to recover from winter months. Recognizing these seasonal patterns is the first step in effective wildlife management.
Proactive Steps to Prevent Deer Damage
To mitigate deer damage, vineyard managers must employ a combination of strategies tailored to their property. The most effective approaches include:
Install High-Quality Deer Fencing
The single most effective way to keep deer out is to install fencing designed specifically for wildlife control. At a minimum, fencing should be 7.5 feet tall to prevent deer from jumping over. Options like poly or metal fences provide durable, long-lasting barriers and can be customized to fit vineyard layouts, including uneven terrain.Time Your Measures Strategically
Installing or reinforcing fencing before critical seasons begins is key. "Deer are creatures of habit," Horetsky explains. "Once they establish a feeding area, it's hard to keep them out. The best approach is to have your fencing in place before they make your vineyard part of their routine."Utilize Complementary Deterrents
Motion-activated sprinklers, noise devices, or natural repellents can further deter deer, especially at vineyard edges or entry points where pressure is highest.Keep Fences Maintained
Regular inspections and repairs ensure fences remain effective year-round. Damage from storms, wildlife, or wear can create vulnerabilities that deer will exploit.
"One small break in a fence is all it takes for deer to get in," Horetsky says. "Regular maintenance is just as important as the fence itself. It’s a long-term investment that pays off season after season."
Why Prevention Matters: Economic and Quality Impacts
Unchecked deer damage doesn’t just lead to lost grapes—it also results in significant economic and quality repercussions. Reduced yields mean lower revenue per acre, while damaged vines may take seasons to recover fully. Furthermore, compromised fruit quality can impact a vineyard’s reputation among wineries and consumers. Investing in preventative measures like fencing not only protects the current harvest but also preserves the long-term health and sustainability of the vineyard.
The Role of Expertise in Wildlife Management
The Trident Fence team understands the challenges grape growers face during critical seasons. With years of experience providing wildlife control solutions, they work closely with vineyard managers to design fencing systems tailored to their unique needs. By combining durable materials with expert guidance, they help ensure vineyards remain safe and productive year-round.
Critical seasons like ripening require proactive deer management strategies to protect the vineyard. With durable fencing solutions and strategic planning, grape growers can reduce risks and safeguard their harvests. Acting early and staying vigilant ensures that vines—and bottom lines—thrive, even in high-pressure seasons.

Cost-Effective Fencing for Small and Medium Vineyards: Balancing Budget & ProtectionCost-Effective Fencing for Small and Medium Vineyards
For small and medium vineyards, balancing crop protection with budget constraints can be a challenging task. Wildlife damage, particularly from deer, can significantly impact yields and threaten a vineyard’s bottom line. While large-scale vineyards often have the resources to invest in high-tech solutions, smaller wineries need affordable yet reliable options to safeguard their vines.

The Challenges of Wildlife Management for Small and Medium Vineyards
Smaller vineyards often face unique challenges when it comes to wildlife management. Limited budgets can make it difficult to invest in extensive control systems, while the smaller scale of operations means even minimal wildlife damage can result in significant revenue loss. Additionally, managing labor and maintenance costs further stretches already limited resources, leaving vineyards vulnerable to the impact of deer and other wildlife.
“We’ve seen time and time again that even small amounts of deer damage can be devastating for a vineyard,” says George Horetsky, senior sales representative at Trident Fence. “Vines take years to mature, and one bad season of browsing can set growers back significantly. That’s why finding an affordable, effective fencing solution is so important.”
Despite these hurdles, small and medium vineyards don’t have to compromise on crop protection. Affordable fencing options provide an effective and long-lasting solution to wildlife threats.
Affordability Without Sacrificing Quality
Cost-effective fencing doesn’t mean cutting corners. Modern materials and designs offer durable, budget-friendly solutions that stand up to wildlife pressure. Key features to consider include:
- Polypropylene mesh fencing is a lightweight yet sturdy option and an economical choice for vineyards needing reliable protection against deer. It’s UV-resistant, easy to install, and provides a cost-effective barrier.
- Metal mesh fencing offers long-term protection with minimal maintenance for vineyards requiring greater durability. Galvanized options resist rust and are ideal for areas with high wildlife activity.
- Customization options ensure vineyards only pay for what they need, optimizing costs while maintaining high levels of effectiveness.
“Every vineyard has unique needs based on terrain, wildlife pressure, and budget,” Horetsky explains. “That’s why we work closely with growers to customize fencing solutions that fit their situation. The right fence can provide peace of mind without breaking the bank.”
Maximizing Value: Tips for Small and Medium Vineyards
To get the most out of a fencing investment, vineyards can take several cost-saving steps. Protecting the most vulnerable sections first, such as areas near forests or water sources, allows for gradual expansion as budget allows. Many fencing solutions are designed for easy installation, reducing labor costs. Trident Fence provides detailed guides and support to make the process more manageable for smaller operations.
Durability should also be a key factor when selecting materials, as fences requiring minimal upkeep reduce long-term maintenance expenses. Pairing fencing with additional deterrents, such as repellents or noise devices, can enhance protection without significantly increasing costs.
“We always recommend starting with a strong perimeter fence and then reinforcing it with secondary deterrents if needed,” Horetsky adds. “That approach keeps costs manageable while still delivering reliable protection.”
Why Cost-Effective Fencing Is a Smart Investment
Protecting a vineyard isn’t just about avoiding immediate crop loss—it’s about ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability. A single season of deer damage can lead to years of recovery for young vines. By investing in affordable, high-quality fencing, vineyards can preserve yields and revenue, protect vine health for future harvests, and enhance the quality of grapes by reducing wildlife-related stress on plants.
“At the end of the day, fencing is an investment in the future of the vineyard,” Horetsky says. “It’s about keeping crops safe and ensuring the hard work that goes into winemaking isn’t undone by wildlife damage. The right solution balances protection, budget, and ease of maintenance.”
Small and medium vineyards play a vital role in the wine industry, and protecting their crops shouldn’t come at an unsustainable cost. With the right fencing, growers can safeguard their investment without compromising quality or profitability.

Trident Fence's Black Fixed Knot Fencing: The Perfect Blend of Durability and Elegance to Protect Your VineyardIn the wine industry, the importance of protecting your vineyard cannot be overstated. Fencing is not just a means of securing your valuable crops; it is an integral part of maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your vineyard. Recognizing this need, Trident Fence is excited to announce the addition of black fixed knot fencing to our product lineup, offering a perfect blend of durability, reliability, and subtle elegance.
Unmatched Durability and Reliability
At Trident Fence, we understand that vineyard owners demand the highest quality materials to protect their investments. Our black fixed knot fencing is built to meet these specifications.
“The fixed knot design is the industry standard in agricultural fencing, known for its unparalleled strength and longevity,” said George Horetsky, Trident’s senior sales representative. “It is designed to withstand the harshest weather conditions and the daily wear and tear that comes with protecting a vineyard. It also provides a robust barrier against deer and other wildlife, ensuring your grapes remain safe and secure.”
Why Choose Fixed Knot Fencing?
Strength and Stability: Fixed knot fencing offers superior tensile strength compared to traditional hinge-joint fencing. The fixed knots keep the wires tightly in place, preventing sagging and ensuring the fence remains taut and secure over time.
Long-lasting Performance: The high-tensile steel used in our fixed knot fencing is resistant to rust and corrosion, with Class III Galvanization. This ensures your fence has a long lifespan even in challenging environmental conditions.
Reduced Maintenance: With its robust construction, fixed knot fencing requires minimal maintenance, allowing you to focus more on managing your vineyard and less on fence repairs.
Aesthetic Elegance with a Sleek Black Finish
While functionality is paramount, the visual appeal of your vineyard also plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and potential customers. "Our black fixed knot fencing features a premium finish that blends seamlessly into natural surroundings,” Horetsky said. “This understated elegance ensures that the fence does not detract from the beauty of your landscape but rather enhances it.”
Benefits of the Finished Coating
Seamless Integration: The black coating allows the fence to blend into the background, making it less obtrusive and more visually appealing.
Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: The coating adds to the aesthetic value and provides additional protection against rust and corrosion, further extending the fence's life.
Versatility: Whether you have a traditional vineyard or a modern, architecturally designed estate, the black fixed knot fencing complements any style.
Tailored for Vineyard Needs
Trident Fence’s black fixed knot fencing was designed with vineyard owners in mind. The 8-foot height provides an optimal barrier, effectively deterring deer and other wildlife, ensuring the security of your crops.
“The flexibility of the fixed knot design allows for simple installation on uneven terrain, making it suitable for the varied landscapes often found in popular vineyard regions,” said Horetsky.

What Is Fixed Knot Fencing and How Is It Used?
According to the article “FIXED KNOT FENCE: THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN AMERICAN RANCH FENCING, ranchers started out by letting their livestock roam free in wide-open areas with no fencing. As time passed, the invention of the barbed wire fence played a crucial role in the rancher world. It was a versatile fence that could provide security from predators and offer a more controlled area for livestock to roam.
There were flaws, however. Barbed wire fencing began losing its shape quickly, which could lead to potential sagging and breakage. Costs were a concern due to the need for more wooden posts to prevent this potential breakage.
Where there are problems, there are solutions. Fixed knot became the new innovative fencing. Fixed knot is a high-tensile fence that offers interconnected and horizontal wires that form product for cattle squares and rectangles of overlapping wound wires. This knot type allows for more strength and stability in the vertical spacing. This is an extremely tensioned fence that will not sag or break. It is a safer alternative to barbed wire fencing and will keep predators out! It is a heavy-duty fence and typically requires machinery or multiple helpers to transport.
Fixed knot is a great fence to keep deer out (and other well-known predators) and keeping your livestock safe from harm! Check out our Fixed Knot options here:https://www.deerbusters.com/fixed-knot-fence-rolls...

Increased Lumber Prices
Last year, COVID caused thousands of businesses to shut down. Unexpectedly, the lumber industry took quite a big hit. Sawmills were forced to shut down causing a limited amount of lumber supplies. The whole world was stuck inside. With all that free time, why not start a new project? Neighbors, friends, and family started gardening, DIY projects, home improvement/additions and so on. Demand in construction began increasing tremendously.
A decrease in supply and an increase in demand drove prices of lumber to an ultimate high. Even now, lumber companies are struggling to catch up. The industry's hope is to get ahead of supply and demand and be able to offer a customer-friendly pricing.
Many of our Deerbusters customers love the look of wooden posts with our fencing, and we love it too! Although we may not supply lumber, we love to see our customers happy! In the end, we hope that lumber costs come to a significant decline and our customers can begin to work on their new projects.

Protect Your Vineyards with DeerBusters Fence
According to the Deer and Hunter article, human rights activists plans to seek an end to fishing and hunting in the state of Oregon. If this initiative is passed, this will consider any injury of mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians a felony unless in an act of self-defense.
Having an overabundance of deer could potentially lead to destruction of the ecosystem. We all know deer enjoying eating. With more hungry deer on this rise, the more plant species may begin to dissipate. The human species could be affected in a big way too! Almost all of us could say we, or someone we know, has been, or has almost been in an accident due to a deer. A huge concern with increased deer is the influx of vehicle accidents. Ticks could enter yards with ease as the deer stroll onto properties for a quick bite to eat.
While living in an overpopulated deer area, precautions need to be taken in order to preserve the surrounding environment. With DeerBusters fence, you can feel relief knowing that your environment is safe from deer mayhem.

Using Deer Vision to Your AdvantageDeer can be a nuisance in your vineyard. To keep them out, consider using a deer exclusion fencing solution.
In order for a fence to be effective, the fence has to be high enough. Deer are excellent jumpers and can clear a 7 ft. fence with ease. To combat these high-flying creatures, we offer 8 ft. fences in a variety of materials.
The reason a tall fence is more effective for deer is due to how their eyes work. Being on the side of their head, it gives them a full 360-degree vision range compared to the 180-degree range of a human. While being able to see on all sides has its advantages, it also comes with a disadvantage – depth perception.
Deer are not able to gauge how high something is due to their lack of depth perception. This comes in handy when deterring deer from jumping into your yard or garden. They will typically not want to risk injury by jumping without being able to judge the height. In this instance, deer would prefer to simply go around the obstacle.
We also recommend adding warning banners to make sure the deer notices the fence. Warning banners are a small piece of the puzzle that you may think insignificant, but they are very effective in alerting a deer to the presence of the fence. Deer have black and white vision so using a black or white banner to contrast the environment will make it more visible to the animal.
