There’s a Smarter Way to Ship – And It Starts With Ditching Wooden Pallets

For decades, wooden pallets have been the default for shipping and material handling. But when you take a closer look at the cost, weight, space, and sustainability factors, it’s clear they’re no longer the smartest option. Businesses looking to stay competitive are moving toward a better solution: Repsco plastic slip sheets.

Made from durable, recycled plastics, Repsco slip sheets offer the same load stability as wooden pallets, without the bulk. Their ultra-thin, lightweight design significantly reduces freight weight, which translates directly into lower shipping costs. Slip sheets weigh nearly 97% less than a standard wooden pallet, and their slim profile—less than half an inch thick—frees up space on warehouse floors, in trailers, and on production lines.

But the benefits don’t stop at logistics. Repsco slip sheets eliminate common pallet headaches like broken boards, protruding nails, and moisture damage. That means no repair costs, no return programs, and no surprises when your product arrives at its destination. You get a safer, cleaner, more efficient way to move goods at a fraction of the cost. In many cases, businesses report savings of 84–90% per use when switching to slip sheets.

Smarter shipping starts with smarter materials. Whether you’re trying to cut costs, free up space, or improve operational efficiency, Repsco plastic slip sheets are designed to deliver long-term value. It’s time to move beyond outdated wooden pallets and embrace the modern alternative that’s better for your bottom line.

Say Goodbye to Wooden Pallets. There’s a Smarter Way to Ship.

Still using wooden pallets? It might be time to rethink your load-handling strategy.

Repsco’s plastic slip sheets offer a lightweight, cost-saving, and space-efficient alternative to traditional wood pallets—without compromising on strength or reliability.

Here’s how slip sheets stack up:

Lighter Weight = Lower Shipping Costs
Slip sheets are a fraction of the weight of wood pallets, reducing freight weight and saving money. Slip sheets on average weigh 96.6% less than a midrange wooden pallet and are 99.4% thinner (4/100s of an inch) vs. the pallet’s 6.5 inches

Space-Saving Design
One stack of slip sheets replaces hundreds of bulky pallets, freeing up valuable warehouse and trailer space—and can be stored right at the point of use, including along the production line or under conveyor systems.

Cost-Effective
No repair, no return programs, no replacement fees. Slip sheets cost significantly less per use than wooden pallets - usually 84 – 90% less, if not more.

Cleaner & Safer
No nails. No splinters. No moisture issues. Just clean, durable plastic that performs in even the most demanding environments.

Better for the Planet
Made from recycled plastics and fully recyclable after use, Repsco slip sheets support your sustainability goals.

Make the switch to smarter shipping.

Wrap up Savings with Long-Lived, Low-Cost Slip Sheets

Wooden pallets have been a mainstay of wine operations and manufacturing for generations. But in today’s difficult economic environment, even wineries that are hesitant to experiment with alternatives are considering cost-saving alternatives. One of these options is recycled, recyclable plastic slip sheets, which can also replace corrugated or solid fiberboard pull sheets.

Slip sheets have been on the market for decades, but are underutilized in the wine industry. Yet affordable, highly durable plastic alternatives to wooden pallets and fiber sheets can substantially reduce packaging, shipping, and warehousing costs.

George J. Isaac, Jr., the sales director for Repsco, Inc., the industry-leading producer of these custom-designed slips sheets, explains how much wineries can save: “Most standard pallets used in manufacturing cost an average of $10 and weigh 40‒50 pounds without product. A Repsco’s SuperSheet typically weighs 1½ pounds and costs $2. Major manufacturers here in California, including medium- to large-sized wineries, can have 100,000 pallets in circulation. And if each of those 100,000 pallets costs $10, that’s a $1 million outlay versus $200,000 dollars for the same number of SuperSheets.”

Modesto-based Repsco manufactures fully recyclable high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets made from 100% recycled material, mainly with California recyclers, ticking the sustainability box for wineries focused on reducing their carbon footprint, especially when longevity is factored in. It custom-makes SuperSheets to match each client's length, width and thickness configuration for four primary uses. They can fortify pallets from the top, providing 70% more stability, 92% more portability and up to 98% more sterility than a wood-based solution. Within the load, they can stabilize product layers, reducing damage by up to 100%. SuperSheets can function as a tier sheet between layers to improve load stacking and reduce shifting in transit, minimizing damage and maximizing freight efficiency.

“Durability is to me one of the key benefits of the SuperSheet,” says Isaac, making the decision to switch from wood pallets or fiber sheets even more attractive. Pallets are heavy, making them backbreaking to handle. They also break, crack and provide a perfect hiding place for rodents and insects. As they age, nails begin to protrude, causing injuries, tearing fiber sheets and damaging products. Wood-based sheets and pallets are also susceptible to heat, humidity and moisture, while SuperSheets are nearly invulnerable.

A well-cared-for SuperSheet can be reused many times more, while fiber sheets are often tossed out after the first use. Reusing SuperSheets just once or twice will cover their initial cost. Repsco also buys back a winery’s SuperSheets when they reach end-of-life. The Green to Gold program’s purchase credits encourage recycling and conservation while showcasing Repsco’s strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

“The transition from wood pallets to SuperSheets is an operational change in how products are stored and shipped,” notes Isaac, “requiring a specialized push-pull forklift attachment. However, the ROI of that capital expense will be recouped very quickly.”

With lumber prices still rising, wood pallets and fiber-based sheets are less affordable than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Reach out to Repsco to learn more about how your winery can save money by relying on SuperSheets and state-of-the-art recycling technology.

Smarter for Your Business. Smarter for the Planet.

In today’s market, smart decisions go beyond immediate cost savings—they align with long-term sustainability goals and operational efficiency. Repsco plastic slip sheets check every box. Designed from the ground up to reduce waste, improve load handling, and support a circular economy, they offer a better way to ship—without compromising performance.

Each Repsco slip sheet is made from recycled post-consumer and post-industrial plastics, transforming material that would otherwise end up in landfills into a reliable and efficient logistics tool. And when a slip sheet reaches the end of its useful life? It can be recycled again. That’s not just responsible—it’s practical. With every load shipped, your business contributes to reducing environmental impact and conserving valuable resources.

But sustainability isn’t just a feel-good story—it’s a smart business move. Lighter than wooden pallets, slip sheets reduce the weight of shipments, which leads to lower fuel usage and fewer trucks on the road. That means cost savings and fewer carbon emissions in a single move. Slip sheets also eliminate repair and return programs, reduce the risk of contamination in sensitive environments, and provide consistent, clean performance in any shipping condition.

Repsco slip sheets represent a rare combination of eco-conscious design and economic advantage. For companies looking to modernize their logistics, reduce costs, and build a smarter supply chain, they offer a clear path forward. Better for the planet, better for the business—that’s the Repsco difference.

It's about sustainability

Do slip sheets equal a sustainable industry? We think so. Consider this: In 10 years of growth, a pine tree can only produce enough wood to make two (2) wooden pallets - which cannot be recycled. In the same period, the average household produces enough recyclable plastic trash to produce 8,500 slip sheets – which are 100% recyclable. The use of slip sheets in day-to-day manufacturing operations brings the peace of mind to contributing to the future of the environment. REPSCO’s experience and equipment enables us to create a recycling system like no other company in our industry. Let’s have a conversation – gisaac@repsco.com or call me at 209-312-3700.

Heading Towards a Pallet-free World

Palletized materials handling represents a major drag on business profits and a significant contribution to pollution worldwide. The world is going pallet-free and REPSCO, Inc. is leading that conversion.

It is estimated that there are over 5 billion wood pallets in the world today and 2 billion in the U.S. alone. Not only does that represent the consumption of countless trees – mostly scarce hardwood varieties – but most nations require wood pallets to be chemically treated to eliminate biohazards. That requires millions of gallons of toxic chemicals and drastically reduces the recyclability of those pallets.

How Plastic Slip Sheets Make Economic Sense

Slip Sheets are an innovative solution that offers logistics and production companies many advantages over traditional pallets. Due to their size and material, they are easier to handle and take up much less space with or without goods – a real economic advantage for logistics and manufacturing companies. In this article, we show how slip sheets can help your company achieve greater transparency and flexibility and how you can significantly reduce your logistics costs.

What are slip sheets?

In commercial transport, slip sheets are thin, pallet-sized sheets of plastic, heavy laminated kraft paper, or corrugated fibreboard used to replace traditional wooden pallets. A slip sheet is used to support wares loaded onto it during transportation and delivery.

This solution, as well as pallets, is usually needed to facilitate the handling, storage, and transportation of goods. Products are typically packed in packages (e.g., cans or cartons), a certain number of which fit on a pallet or an intermediate shelf. These can then be stacked on top of each other, which means much better use of space in logistics.

Economic benefits of slip sheets

Why does it make sense to use slip sheets instead of pallets?
  • Lighter weight: Pallets are made of hardwood and are very heavy due to their structure, with an average weight of 20 kg. In comparison, slip sheets weigh 620 g/m2, which is a great advantage in logistics. Especially for stackable goods, the weight of the pallets can account for up to 20-30% of the total weight. With the slip sheet solution, this can be reduced to a fraction of this, so that smaller loading trolleys or even racking systems are sufficient.
  • Lower height: The height of slip sheets is much lower compared to conventional pallets. Even the most massive versions are smaller by half an inch, but in the standard case, you should expect less than half the height of a wooden pallet. This can result in significant space savings of up to 15-20% in both storage and transportation.
  • Zero maintenance: With many traditional logistics solutions, maintenance can be a major challenge, especially hygiene and the replacement of broken or damaged pallets. With slip sheets, no such maintenance is required, as damaged pallets can be easily replaced, while there is simply no room for rodents to infest.
  • Highly customizable: Due to the material and thickness of slip sheets, they are much easier to shape and some types can even be resized on site.
  • An environmentally friendly solution: Companies have to spend more and more on environmental protection, which is reflected in logistics, including the cost of waste collection. Repsco slip sheets are made of high-quality recycled plastic that can be reused later and produces much less waste.

Repsco, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, offers slip sheet products to suit all your business needs. They cost a fraction of the price of traditional pallets but make economic sense for a whole host of other reasons. With plastic slip sheets, you can make your logistics processes more efficient, more transparent, and significantly more economical.
