Recently, HotSpot AG collaborated with an irrigator to automate VFD pressure adjustments using HotSpot AG solutions when switching between blocks within the irrigation schedule. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are valuable for cutting energy costs and reducing equipment wear. However, they can be complex to operate, often requiring frequent trips between the pump station and valve manifolds, leading many to set them at higher pressures for assurance that crops receive adequate water.

Recently, we observed the drip line pressure by measuring at the block's highest elevation, furthest from the pump while running water at the usual 95 psi. By adjusting the VFD set point in HotSpot' down to 60 psi, we discovered that the emitters maintained 32 psi, which was more than sufficient. This adjustment means the pump can operate at lower power, resulting in a significant 63% energy cost savings for the customer!

In return for this enlightening collaboration, the irrigator introduced us to a practical tool for checking emitter pressure without the need to dismantle the drip line, offering a cleaner and more convenient solution. The device pictured below can be purchased from Wyatt for a nominal fee. The irrigator also shared how using HotSpot AG's systems has freed up time previously spent manually opening and closing valves. Thanks to automated irrigation settings we can save this customer even more.
