Soda Rock Wins Best of Mendocino in Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge for Chardonnay From Hopland Vineyard
Isabelle Adams of Soda Rock Winery chooses her wine competitions very carefully. The 8-year-old winery produces about 6k cases yearly, and relies on direct to consumer sales for most of the production. Although they’ve tried other competitions over the years, Adams divides her entries equally between international and local competitions, including the North Coast Wine Challenge (NCWC).
“It is very important to us to have local wins and medals that we can promote. We use the awards and scores in the tasting room, and in our emails and our advertising. It definitely influences people’s decisions when they are able to taste the wine before purchasing, and it also is very rewarding for the winemaker!” she says.
Although Soda Rock, in the heart of Alexander Valley, is primarily a Cabernet house, they offer 20 different reds and blends, including an increasing number of Zinfandels. Being part of the Wilson Artisan winery stable gives them access to fruit from a variety of AVAs.
The Soda Rock property is a magnificent historic structure that dates back to 1869. In 2000, Ken and Diane Wilson acquired the run down and neglected property, pouring ample resources into making it the beautiful and welcoming spot it is today.
Adams admits the win for the 2016 Soda Rock Mendocino Chardonnay was unexpected and quite welcomed. It was the first-time winemaker Antoine Favero had made Chardonnay from the Jaxon Keys Vineyard in Hopland into a wine under the Soda Rock label.
Favero was born in the Champagne region of France, but his French mother and Italian father moved the family to a Peruvian coastal fishing village when he was a little boy. At age nine, the family relocated to Northern California’s wine country, where Favero discovered his passion. After attending UC Davis, Antoine worked at Mazzocco, where he created many award-winning Zinfandels before coming to Soda Rock.
Favero fermented the hand-harvested fruit in 40% new French oak for 22 months, using sur lees stirring to impart a creamy texture that carries the pear, guava, white nectarine and tropical fruit flavors in a mouth-flooding wave. Only one-third of the wine went through malolactic, preserving the essence of citrus through the mid-palate.
The Wilson Artisan wineries are opening a new joint tasting room in downtown Healdsburg, where wines from their entire portfolio will be available. Called Coyote Sonoma, the concept will offer bar bites to enjoy, along with beer and wine on tap. The site was previously Sonoma Cider, which shuttered earlier this year. Should be another winning concept from the Wilson’s who see — and seize — an opportunity at every turn.
Sadly, though, you won’t be able to taste any of the award-winning 2016 Mendocino Chardonnay, though, as it sold out within two months of winning the honors. Isabelle hopes to have more of it from this year’s harvest.

Can You Beat This? Kokomo’s 100-Point Score in the North Coast Wine Challenge a Game-Changer
When winemaker Erik Miller got the call informing him that his 2015 Gopher Hill Pinot had just garnered a 100-point score, and oh, by the way, it took Best of Show at the 2018 North Coast Wine Challenge, he didn’t quite know what to expect.
“It’s been the craziest thing!” says Miller, who started the Kokomo brand in 2004 with Cabernet Sauvignon. “We got a good Wine Spectator score (for the Cab) in 2005, then again in 2006, and in 2007, Spectator wrote about us. This time last year, Parker wrote about 5 Sonoma Cabs that rival Napa Valley, and we got some good sales after that. But after the 100-point score for the Pinot, we were definitely on the radar.”
He observed an amazing spike in views of the video Kokomo has on Vimeo in conjunction with the win. “You can see a huge spike in April, right after the announcement.”
“The local relevance of this win has been amazing,” continues Miller. “We had a line of people out the door the next day when we opened! And we had more than 50 web orders for the wine! It was the craziest reaction ever. We sold out in two days.”
Miller was forced to release the 2016 Gopher Hill Pinot far earlier than he had planned, “We explained to people that this was the ‘big brother’ to the 2015, from my favorite barrels, with more oak aging. It wasn’t really ready, but we released it anyway and sold it out a month ago. Now we have the 2017 Gopher Hill on the bar.”
Because much of the 2015 Gopher Hill Pinot had already been allocated to Wine Club, it made fulfilling orders even more difficult. “You can really cause damage when you run out,” Miller observes. “My Hospitality Manager said to me, ‘Don’t make any more 100-point wines!! You’ve made my job so hard!’”
Miller says the reaction at the public event held to honor the winners of the North Coast Challenge was phenomenal. “I love the event. It’s really cool and draws a great young crowd. All the winners are acknowledged in the paper (The Press Democrat), which is great, and then again in Sonoma magazine. From a local perspective, it’s had a huge impact.”
A big win in a major competition goes a long way, though. He’s very fond of the North Coast Challenge, which he won in 2012 for his first rosé, garnering best rosé for the next two years. (His 2017 Grenache Rosé vied for best rosé in 2018 as well.) Miller also participates in the San Francisco Chronicle, and in the Indy International, held in his home state of Indiana. Kokomo is named for the blue-collar town where he grew up.
“The North Coast Wine Challenge is our favorite competition,” admits Miller. “It has diversity and attracts the biggest number of entries from Lake, Mendocino and Sonoma counties. We love the judges, who are a combination of winemakers and sommeliers. It is very important to us.”
Miller isn’t letting any of this go to his head, however, “I took a lot of crap from my peers! They were all teasing me about a 100-point wine. I thought about making a t-shirt that says, ‘Touch me, I’m a 100-point winemaker!’ But really, all that aside, it’s been absolutely amazing. But we are still down to earth here at Kokomo. We have no chandeliers or extravagance. I want to maintain affordable wines the best I can, out of respect for where I grew up. I don’t want to be charging $70 a bottle!”

2026 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge Now Accepting Submissions
On April 7-8, 2026, a collection of esteemed wine professionals will gather in Santa Rosa, Calif., to evaluate entries in the 2026 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge. Competition managers are now accepting entries for the 14th annual NCWC, considered among the most prestigious wine challenges in the United States.
This regional competition rates wines exclusively produced and bottled in Northern California’s premier winegrowing region to determine which wines are considered the Best of the Best. Eligible wines must be made from fruit sourced in the North Coast AVAs of Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, Marin and parts of Solano counties. This includes any bottled wine labeled with these AVAs as their main source of grapes and whose winery is in California.
“The Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge is unique in that only wines made from grapes grown in the six North Coast counties are allowed to enter,” says Daryl Groom, chief judge of NCWC. “With that, the starting quality is high — and our experienced wine judges know that. Typically, 95% of the wines receive awards and 30% or more typically score gold or above.”
NCWC only promotes the highest awarded-wines (golds and above), keeping your win exceptional and exclusive. Golds are converted into a point score above 90 and all 90+ point wines will get a marketable positive comment from the judging panel. Winning gold medals can help boost sales and brand awareness for producers of all sizes, but small wineries can truly benefit from a gold medal in this contest.
“I like to think of this competition as the ‘size me up’ competition, where wineries and winemakers that enter get way more than they do from usual wine competitions,” says Groom. “Not only do you get the typical medal, but gold medal-winning wines get a 90 point or higher score and a marketing comment from the judges.
“In addition to that, they get to showcase their winning wines to 1000+ passionate consumers at the North Coast Wine and Food Festival, a wonderful opportunity for promoting and selling. Stellar coverage in the widely read Press Democrat newspaper adds to the rewards and, if that’s not enough, every winemaker is in the running to be awarded Winemaker of the Year in the Harvest edition of Sonoma Magazine.
“So I encourage winemakers to enter and get ‘sized up,’” he concludes.
The best wines draw the best professional wine judges, who annually vie for a coveted spot to judge NCWC. Many are seasoned retailers, distributors, restaurateurs and influential wine writers, who promote the wines they enjoy and can help give your wine increased exposure.
Groom adds, “All of our 30+ judges are hand-selected not only because they have great palates and wine expertise but because they have added value — being restaurant or retail buyers or members of the media who love to write about the wines they taste and discover.”
Public announcement of awards is made in print by The Press Democrat newspaper, the North Bay Area’s primary source for news and information. Additional ongoing promotion is made in other print publications, online, by virtual newsletters and through social media outlets.
Gold medal winners are invited to pour and have their wines enjoyed at the North Coast Wine & Food Festival, annually organized and hosted by The Press Democrat. This is a fun-filled day enjoyed by wine enthusiasts from near and far, who look forward to tasting the Best of the Best wines Northern California has to offer.
Enter the 2026 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge before midnight, March 16 for an Early Bird discount. Final entry deadline is March 26.

2025 Harvest Challenge Wine Competition Announces WinnersDomaine Della 2023 Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir Takes Top Prize

November 18, 2025 — Winners have been announced in the 2025 Harvest Challenge Wine Competition. After two spirited days of judging, Domaine Della 2023 Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir took the top prize. It was also awarded Best of Show Red Wine and Best of Monterey County AVA. Coming in at 98 points, judges praised the wine as “warm and spicy” with “fig and nutmeg.” Other descriptors included “meaty,” “prosciutto,” and “dried rose petal.”
With entries from across the globe, the Harvest Challenge bases judging on a group of vineyards (or even vines) from the same region, belonging to a specific appellation and sharing the same type of soil, weather conditions and grapes that combine to give personality to the wine.
In other competitions, this terroir is ignored. At the Harvest Challenge, judges taste wines alongside others from the same appellation. With cross-regional competition removed, the inherent quality of wines can be seen without the influences that sometimes eclipse even a wine of very high quality.
Below is a list of Best of Class medals awarded at this year’s competition. Visit www.winecompetitions.com for more information.

The Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge along with its intimate team of judges are saddened by the recent loss of much-loved fellow judge Bill Hayes.
Bill was one of the core judges for the past 5 competitions and his expertise, knowledge, experience, and friendliness will be very much missed.
Says Daryl Groom Chief Judge “Bill was always top of my list to invite back every year. He had a great palate but more importantly he just got along with everyone. He is a judge you could put on any panel as he loved and appreciated all wines and simply got along with everyone. He was always happy and smiling and at the end of every competition made sure he came and thanked me for having him and how much he enjoyed himself. He was often the last one to leave, always being around and volunteering for any Gold Medal judge offs for Best of Class. He oozed passion, respect, and kindness.

2024 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge Now Accepting Submissions
January 29th – On April 2-3, 2024, a collection of esteemed wine professionals will gather in Santa Rosa, Calif., to evaluate entries in the 2024 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge. Competition managers are now accepting entries for the 12th annual NCWC, considered among the most prestigious wine challenges in the United States.
“The competition focuses only on the high quality wines made on the North Coast that includes the six local counties,” says Daryl Groom, chief judge of NCWC. “We do not allow entries outside of these premium appellations nor allow international entries. Our judges know the quality will be high. Every past competition, judges have awarded more than 20% of the wines Gold Medal or above — some years up to 30%.”
The best wines draw the best professional wine judges, who annually vie for a coveted spot to judge NCWC. Many are seasoned retailers, distributors, restaurateurs and influential wine writers, who promote the wines they enjoy and can help give your wine increased exposure.
“Our professional judges are the most experienced and influential in the area and are made up of retail and restaurant buyers, prominent winemakers, sommeliers, media personalities and wine writers,” says Groom. “So aside from winning medals, wineries that enter get their wines exposed to the North Coast wine industry ‘movers and shakers.’”
Public announcement of awards is made in print by The Press Democrat newspaper, the North Bay Area’s primary source for news and information. Additional ongoing promotion is made in other print publications, online, by virtual newsletters, and through social media outlets.
“One of the core efforts of our company is to bring the community together, to engage our audiences in ways that educate, inform and celebrate,” says Eric Johnson, CEO and publisher for Sonoma Media Investments, which owns the Press Democrat newspaper. “Through the North Coast Wine Challenge, we are able to celebrate the amazing products of our region. [It] supports our local economy and recognizes the role the community plays in its production — from the vineyard workers to the winemakers.”
“The North Bay Food and Wine Festival is a fantastic way for our winning regional winemakers to introduce their wines to thousands of wine enthusiasts from all over Northern California,” continues Johnson. “Included in their ticket price, guests will have access to the best wines produced in our region along with food samples from some incredible area chefs. Being relatively new to the area — and a first-time attendee at last-years event — I’ve really never seen anything like it. It’s definitely one of the things that makes living in Sonoma County incredibly special.”

Judging for the North Coast Wine Challenge Postponed, New Dates to be AnnouncedIn response to steps county officials are taking to minimize the spread of the coronavirus, the North Coast Wine Challenge has been postponed. However, organizers are still accepting entries at pdncwc.com.
Past contests have drawn more than 1,000 entries from across the North Bay — Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Marin, Lake and Solano counties. And winemakers whose bottles have risen to the top to claim the Best of the Best title have seen their wins echo in unexpected ways.
The contest is now in its eighth year. Organizers hope judging will take place in May. The gold medal-winners will be invited to pour at the North Coast Wine & Food Festival. Hosted by the Press Democrat, the event is planned to be held at a new venue this year –– Santa Rosa’s Luther Burbank Center for the Arts.
Only once, in 2018, has an entry scored a perfect 100 out of 100 points in the Wine Challenge — the Kokomo 2016 Gopher Hills Block, Peters Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
“The win put us in a different category,” said Kokomo Winery co-owner and winemaker Erik Miller. A far-reaching media response followed, all the way back to Miller’s hometown in Indiana. At the winery, the winning wine sold out in three days.
Last year, after St. Francis Winery’s 2016 Tres Viejos, Sonoma County, Old Vines Zinfandel was declared the Best of the Best with 99 points, the winery also saw demand jump and supply eventually run out.
For the 2017 winner, Taft Street, which scored 98 points with its 2016 Russian River Valley Rosé of Pinot Noir, the win brought more visitors to their tasting room. It also was a reward in itself.
