Flextank’s new Gemini tank has been designed as an elegant and practical alternative to the traditional oak barrel for wine aging. Available in four designer colors it has a shape that owes something to both the traditional barrel and the more recent “egg” shaped tanks. Capacity wise it is equivalent to two barrels (120 gallons or 450 liters). The principal design feature of the Gemini is a clamp closure at the “Equator” of the tank that allows it to be broken down into two halves giving significant functional advantages.

NEW - ORION from Flextank! Holds 528 gallons (2,000 Liters)

Flextank’s New ORION tank is the big brother of the APOLLO tank, incorporating patent pending egg-shaped
features our customers have wanted in a larger tank.

Matching index marks are designed into the tank and pallet. Note the tank can be indexed in 90 degree increments to orient fixtures like valves or doors in relation to the forklift pockets in the pallet. Tank is shown in a marble finish. Pallets will be black in production. This color shows index feature more clearly. The small flat on the bottom of the tank can have a bulkhead fitting installed to give complete flush out for cleaning operations when tank is located on pallet and elevated on a forklift.

Economical Fermentation Support: What Can the APOLLO Tank Do for You?

Principally designed as a small batch closed fermentor the APOLLOâ„¢ tank may also be used for long term storage. As a fermentor the Apollo offers a number of advantages over open bin ferments.

A latest trend in winemaking is the Egg shaped tank. Winemakers report superior fermentation results in these tanks due to the shape promoting both internal convection mixing and cap concentration.

Flextank introduces the first polyethylene “egg”. We call it “Apollo” because it looks like the famous Apollo Space Capsule...

Why Should You Take a Look At Apollo?

  • Versatility and costs: Apollo and polyethylene the medium of choice for both small lot production of ultra premium wines and experimentation with fermentation parameters
  • Maneuverability: forklift or other lifting apparatus using two bolt on pivots. A full tank is easily rocked back and forth to re-suspend lees, for example
  • Easy To Handle: Apollo is easily manipulated by hand and can be quite stable at intermediate positions. The lifting apparatus can range from the sophisticated to a simple sling suspended from a forklift.

Once fermentation is complete Apollo serves as a long term storage (similar oxygen permeability to a neutral barrel) or general purpose tank for the winery. Replace those bin fermentors with Apollo and enjoy better fermentation conditions and year round use.

Large 900 Gallon Fermentors: High-Density Polyethylene Wine Filtration

Traditional open top fermenting in a vessel made from modern easy to clean polyethylene material. Principally intended for red ferments, punch down may be achieved manually or with a fork truck mounted plunger. This is a robust vessel and strong enough to accommodate a plank across the top to stand on with a hand plunger-observe safety precautions and do not work alone.

The lid fits over the tank on a taper and protects the ferment from fruit flies etc. There is a 2-inch threaded bung at the top center of the lid for additional attachments.

Molded in “Flats” in the bottom of the tank provide for valve fittings and prevent the tanks jamming together when stacked for storage or transport.

General Purpose Tanks: An Economical Replacement for Oak Barrels

Principally designed as an economic replacement for oak barrels that fits within standard transportation and storage systems. These tanks are not as versatile as the similarly sized "Dexter" 80s with their 19 in. top opening but are a good option if wine maturation is the principal intended use. 6 in. diameter opening provides access for cleaning and oak adjunct addition and removal.

The optional Racking Pallet with contoured center "lug" adds handling ease with fork truck or pallet jack and allows for space efficient storage. The secure top opening and the palleting system also make these tanks a useful option for transporting wine.

Immediate News Release: SmaK Plastics, Inc. Acquires Flextank USA

Global leader in polyethylene beverage maturation tanks, Flextank USA was acquired last week by Vancouver, Washington-based rotational mold pioneer SmaK Plastics, Inc.

Flextank began engineering innovative beverage vessels in the USA in 2006, and very quickly lead the market in new-age wine making with fine and award-winning wines currently being produced in Flextanks in 49 states across the country. The tanks are scientifically engineered to provide tastier results with tremendous cost and space-savings benefits for commercial wine, cider and mead makers over more costly and bulky oak barrels, steel and concrete tank options.

“I’ve used Flextank vessels for 5 vintages with great success and many best in class wines. The versatility and ease of use of the Apollo tank allows me to focus on small lots with attention to detail and allow for gentle skin contact for a clean and proper extraction." says Eric Harris, owner & winemaker of Two EE’s Winery and winner of two International Wine Channel TV 'Rising Star Winemaker' awards (pictured left). Click here to learn more about what award-winning wine makers have to say about their experience using Flextanks.

Sharing over 45 years of tank design and manufacturing experience, SmaK Plastics President Jon Smalley along with VP of Sales Mike Humes were excited to be contracted with Flextank and began production in 2007 by providing contract manufacturing for the rotational molding of the tanks. The partnership was so successful, in 2010 Flextank founders and previous owners John and Jan Smeaton made Mike Humes VP of Operations, further strengthening the bond between companies. In just 7 years, SmaK experienced growth of 1200%.

This April, the Smeatons agreed to sell the assets of Flextank USA to SmaK Plastics with the intention of retiring to their vineyard in Adelaide, Australia in order to be closer to their family. John Smeaton remains on staff as a consultant in new product development while remaining active in the export market.

This acquisition will mean an increase in enhanced-engineering expertise for designing and manufacturing tanks to fit the growing and evolving needs of the wine, cider and mead making communities.

What does this mean for Wine, Cider, and Mead Makers?

Jon Smalley, President

SmaK Plastics & Flextank

“We’ve partnered closely with John Smeaton designing Flextank products, assisting in sales, and becoming deeply ingrained in the world of wine and beverage production, so it became a natural fit for SmaK Plastics to purchase. We are excited to take Flextank to the next level with new products and superior client care for existing and future owners of this great product.”

Mike Humes, VP of Sales

SmaK Plastics & Flextank

“Having worked with both companies for over 7 years, the acquisition of Flextank by SmaK Plastics was a very logical step. SmaK has been doing total fulfillment on Flextank orders for multiple years. We have been bringing customer feedback to our engineering team and are excited to introduce 2 new tanks for 2018- a 120-gallon stacking tank and a 120-gallon cylindrical tank. These new space-saving tanks will be joining the current product portfolio in time for the early harvest this June.

We are confident in the continued growth of Flextank and dedicated to continuing to be the world leader in plastic tanks scientifically-designed for the beverage industry."

New Polyethylene “Egg” Tanks

If you are intrigued by the “buzz” about Egg Tanks -- the modern reincarnation of early Roman and Phoenician amphorae vessels revived in concrete by Nomblot, and since offered by several manufacturers -- you will want to keep abreast of developments at Flextank Inc. The grapevine tells us they have something pretty unique under development and due for release for this vintage.

Flextank (www.flextankusa.com) are the innovators who have brought polyethylene replacements for oak barrels into mainstream winery use. Recognizing that wood, concrete and polyethylene share the ability to permeate oxygen into fermenting or aging wine, it follows that an “Egg” shaped tank in polyethylene can be engineered to offer similar characteristics to concrete or wood vessels at considerably lower cost and much greater handling convenience. We understand 875 and 1750 liter sizes (or thereabouts) are to be offered, and will include fork truck pomace tip out plus the ability to be used as storage vessels post fermentation.

There is nothing on the Flextankusa website just yet but we suggest you keep an eye on the site for upcoming announcements or give them a call at 1-877-407-3348 to see if you can get advance information out of John or Mike.
