Behind The Bottle: Designing Canard Vineyard's 2020 Cuvée Des Cendres Rosé LabelWith the recent launch of our new website (!!!), we are excited to share even more valuable and insightful information on how BERGIN crafts distinctive packaging solutions that elevate your brand.
Whether it's one of our screen printing, etching or dressing projects, when you visit our new SHOWCASE page, you will find a plethora of content walking you through each process of working with our clients to achieve their packaging visions.
We hope this series will make you fall in love with bottle decorating (trust us, it's addicting) and further explain what to expect when you choose to work with our BERGIN family.
Behind The Bottle
Canard Vineyard lost all Napa Valley estate wines in the 2020 Glass Fire, including their much beloved Coucher de Soleil Estate Rosé. Managing Director, Adam Fox, asked us to help design a rosé label honoring those who lost so much in the devastating 2020 fire season in Napa and Sonoma County. In a true multi-AVA collaboration, their French-trained winemaker got to work and sourced some beautiful high-altitude Grenache from Paso Robles, CA and made the wine in Sonoma, CA.

Cuvée des Cendres (“from the ashes”) represents the unwavering resolve of the California farmers, vintners and winemakers who have faced so many devastating fires over the last few years. Canard is French for duck, and it was only fitting to design a duck rising from the ashes.
Let’s Get Technical
Original sketch by Eric Sabee
Designing on flint (clear) bottles is extremely different from working on traditional antique green glass because colors typically appear and behave in an individual fashion on each surface.
Although it often comes with its challenges, our Art Director Eric Sabee knows how to use transparency of the bottle to its advantage.
When considering color selections for Canard’s Rosé, Eric kept in mind how the inks would likely react when overlaid creating various effects in this spectacular design.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this limited production wine will be donated to the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund to support those who have lost so much in the wake of the fires.

Elevating Wine Labels into Conservation Storytelling
Decorating for Impact
Creative Intent: The artwork captures the essence of each species - not just in appearance, but in movement and spirit.
Emotional Connection: Patrons aren't just purchasing a bottle; they're supporting endangered wildlife. The label becomes a conversation piece, influencing both awareness and action.
Applying our Screen Printing & Etching Expertise
Our team had the privilege of both screen printing and etching these intricate designs for Menagerie Cellars, capturing the delicate details that embody the beauty of each animal.
Screen Printing
Transformed intricate illustrations into vibrant inks layered precisely on glass.
Techniques like trapping ensured clean transitions between thick/ thin lines and negative space, preserving design clarity.
Etching

Added tactile depth, giving labels an upscale, collectible feel.
To translate artwork seamlessly into glass textures, we refined design elements by ensuring a minimum line thickness (1 pt.) and removing overly fine details.
This meticulous adaptation preserved the original artistic vision while making it production-ready for glass application.
A Bottle That “Speaks” Conservation
Beyond aesthetics, this label series functions as a brand ambassador for Menagerie Cellars’ conservation mission:
Shelf Presence: The bold, beautiful labels stand out - not just visually, but emotionally.Narrative Engagement: Each animal design prompts curiosity and fosters conversations about endangered wildlife.
Brand Alignment: The label art directly reflects the winery’s mission - turning packaging into a platform for awareness and impact.
Menagerie Cellars and Bergin have shown that packaging can extend purpose - merging design, emotion, and environmental stewardship. If your brand seeks to weave storytelling into its label art - whether through color, texture, technique, or image - our team is ready to help translate your vision into glass.

Celebrating 35 Years of Bergin's Packaging Artistry!
For three and a half decades, Bergin Screen Printing and Etching has been a beacon of creativity and precision in the realm of glass bottle decoration. As the company celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, it reflects on a journey marked by innovation, resilience, and a passion for producing exquisite designs for wine, beer, and spirits bottles.
Bergin bears the imprint of a family legacy, rooted in the entrepreneurial spirit that flows through generations. Founded by Mike Bergin, whose upbringing was steeped in the wisdom of his father, Jack Bergin, today Mike's journey continues alongside his daughter, Savannah Bergin, Director of Operations, and his wife, Karen, as they navigate the intricate landscape of business together.

Originating as an etch and paint studio founded in 1989, Bergin quickly garnered attention for providing an artisanal packaging solution unseen in the industry. Among its earliest winery patrons was the esteemed Robert Mondavi Winery, a collaboration that showcased Bergin's meticulous craftsmanship on labels and packaging for some of Mondavi's finest wines. Today they decorate for a wide variety of clients. It has always been Bergin’s goal to provide packaging for brands of all sizes, many starting out as small family-owned wineries who have grown with them over the years.
In 1995, Bergin embarked on a transformative chapter by introducing screen print decoration to their offerings. This strategic expansion marked a pivotal moment in the company's evolution, symbolizing a commitment to growth and adaptability in an ever-changing industry landscape.

Find Out How Bottle Neck Decoration Can Set Your Brand Apart
In today's competitive wine market, the packaging of a bottle can make a significant difference when it comes to brand recognition and boosting sales. Screen printed wine labels are a game-changer in this regard. The vibrant and visually appealing designs created through screen printing can instantly help your product stand out among the competition - and capture the attention of buyers.
As younger generations are becoming a
prominent consumer group in the wine industry, now is the time to elevate your package. Adapting your branding to digitally savvy consumers who appreciate authenticity, creativity, and personalization - should be of outmost importance.
SCREEN PRINTING
Screen printing offers the flexibility to incorporate these elements into the packaging. Whether it’s visually striking 360° wrap designs, bottle neck and shoulder treatments, multicolor packages or augmented reality experiences on the labels, wine brands can engage younger wine enthusiasts in a way that resonates with their values and preferences. Screen printed wine packages can, therefore, serve as a powerful marketing tool to connect with and capture the loyalty of the younger consumer demographic.
At BERGIN, we take pride in our state-of-the-art facility and a team of expert craftsmen and designers who can turn your vision into reality. Due to our long-standing expertise and innovative solutions, we are known for pushing design limitations experienced with traditional labeling.

Wine Packaging as an Integral Part of Brand Storytelling
When working with a complicated design, our goal at BERGIN is to make it production friendly while not sacrificing the client’s vision. We collaborate on all design details of the labels pushing the envelope with each and every package produced.
The owner of McClean Vineyards fell in love with screen printing allowing it to play an integral role in his success. It’s not often screen printing makes it into the storytelling of a wine brand but in this case, it has everything to do with McClean’s story.
“Through the process of screen printing and soul searching, McClean discovered a way to merge his love of art and good wine. And once he started his journey, he never looked back.
Every bottle has a story to tell inside and outside. We pour craftsmanship and passion into every bottle,
so that those sharing a bottle can connect in the way that matters most."

DESIGN DETAILS
Labels Clemence and Simone both feature neck printing treatments. McClean’s quantities and selection of a neck-print friendly bottle allowed this decoration to be possible.
One Last Syrah showcases both neck and shoulder printing. Burgundy-shaped bottles lend themselves well to shoulder decoration. Their often gradually sloped shoulders make it easy for the screens and machines to find a printable surface. This is harder to achieve in traditional Bordeaux-shaped bottles as the shoulder of the bottle tends to be way more angled, making it difficult to find a printable surface.
The LOVE label has a lot of colors, seven to be exact. This was challenging for screen print, specifically for color registration and lining up the colors to get clean lines when laying down one color to the next. In the spirit of making the design production-friendly, we added a black border around the letters to cover up any misalignment of colors.

Whether you need help with designing a package that reflects your brand's story or you're ready to transition your packaging from paper to screen print, we're here to help you every step of the way.

Paper and Screen Print: Can They Coexist in Wine Packaging Design? In the world of winemaking, the label on a bottle is more than just a piece of paper. It is a canvas that tells the story of the wine within, reflecting its character, history, and craftsmanship. In recent years, a new trend has emerged – the harmonious marriage of traditional paper label design with the contemporary allure of screen printing. Let's dive into the intricate artistry of designing wine bottle labels that seamlessly integrate both paper label and screen print elements.

THE UNIQUENESS OF PAPER LABEL & SCREEN PRINT DESIGN
Paper labels have been an integral part of the wine industry for centuries, offering a tangible connection to tradition and heritage. Meanwhile, screen printing brings a modern edge, allowing for intricate designs, vibrant colors, and a tactile experience that engages all the senses. By combining these two techniques, winemakers and designers are able to achieve a label that resonates with both history and innovation.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Designing a wine label that incorporates both paper and screen print elements is a delicate balancing act. It begins with understanding the essence of the wine itself – its flavor profile, origin, and the emotions it evokes. The design must capture these elements and translate them into visual form. The paper label might feature elegant typography and subtle graphics, while the screen print elements can bring vivid imagery to life, enhancing the label's visual impact.
Looking for a brand refresh done right?
Look no further than Michael David Winery. Their iconic paper labels were thoughtfully redesigned by Makers & Allies who crafted Earthquake’s new look combining two mediums for a ground-shaking look. The new label features a screen printed seismograph with accents of precious gold and an elegant paper label.
TECHNICAL CHALLENGES & INNOVATIONS
Integrating paper and screen print design requires meticulous attention to detail. Factors like ink adhesion, color accuracy, and texture compatibility need to be carefully considered. Innovations in screen printing technology, including the use of special inks and precise application techniques, have paved the way for a flawless marriage of the two mediums.
A SYMPHONY OF TEXTURES & VISUALS
One of the most enchanting aspects of combining paper and screen print design is the interplay of textures and visuals.
The tactile nature of paper lends depth to the label, while screen printing introduces a layer of vibrant imagery that captures the eye. This combination elevates the label into a multi-dimensional work of art that beckons to be touched and admired.
TELLING A STORY THROUGH LAYERS
Each layer of design – from the traditional elegance of the paper label to the contemporary allure of screen print elements – contributes to the narrative of the wine. It's a story that unfolds not only through words and taste but also through sight and touch. This storytelling aspect creates a profound connection between the wine and the consumer.
The fusion of paper labels and screen print design on wine bottle labels is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of artistic expression within the winemaking world. By blending the richness of tradition with the innovation of modern technology, these labels encapsulate the essence of the wine and the creativity of its makers.

Can You Screen Print Labels on Full Wine Bottles?Screen printing on bottles, also known as applied color labeling or ACL, is a delicate process that we’ve been perfecting for over twenty years.
One of the frequently asked questions we often get asked is whether we can screen print wine labels on full bottles.
The answer is NO and here’s why.
When screen printing, thermal-plastic inks are applied via squeegee and screens, which are then fired in a high temperature Lehr for at least 2-3 hours to permanently fuse paint to the glass.
If you’d like your bottles decorated on a filled product, we recommend etching.
Unlike screen printing, etching is a cold (and entirely handmade) process with no heat application required.
We take your label inspiration, be it your paper label designs, a cherished photo, or a piece of original art, and completely translate it to an etched format from scratch.
When working on full bottles, we never expose them to temperatures higher than 66°F, making the process ideal for finishing large format shiners in a way that feels incredibly intentional and special.
Each bottle is hand etched and hand painted in quantities as low as a single bottle or up to 10,000 bottles across every format size from 375ml to 27L.
We fondly refer to our etching artists as “the best art forgers in the business”, as each bottle is a one-of-a-kind work of art with slight variations across each bottle.
As one of the oldest and largest etching companies on the West Coast, our industry knowledge and expertise is unparalleled.

The majority of your project’s duration is spent in this stage, ensuring we take the time so that all is perfected before your production date.

Quality Is Everything
Your product deserves a package that reflects its quality. You've spent countless hours, days, and years perfecting your craft. So have we.
If you’re looking for wine bottle decorators who can give even the most informal, easygoing bottles a luxurious and captivating feel, we’re here for you. Our dedicated team can help you bring fresh life and a touch of richness to the label without losing the heart of your brand.
