New from Tonnellerie Radoux: The OMEGA Barrel; Excellence, by NatureMindful of the ever-changing needs and expectations of our customers and international market trends, Radoux continues to prioritize the improvement of the range of our products and services. To satisfy the increasing demand for barrels respectful of wine, fruit and terroir, Radoux has developed a new barrel for the aging of fine wines: Omega. Exceptional in its purity and finesse, Omega will reveal the identity of your wines with elegance and discretion.
Convergence of knowledge, know-how and experience
The Omega barrel is the culmination of years of research aimed at a better understanding of wood, the toasting process and their interactions with wine.
Omega’s development brings together the skills and experience of Radoux’s R&D and production teams and the advice of a select group of experts in oenology, renowned consultants, and directors of winemaking. A point of convergence of knowledge and expertise, Omega is the result of numerous exchanges, tastings, and feedback from our customers and industry professionals worldwide.
Utmost care in selecting raw material and natural maturation lasting three years
Selecting the wood is the first stage in Radoux’s demand for quality. The oak for Omega barrels comes from the most prestigious forests of central France. Only tight grain oak is rigorously selected for its development. The raw staves are dried naturally in the open air for 3 years in our integrated stave mill in the regional Park of La Brenne, benefiting from this region’s exceptional environmental conditions. Omega also benefits from Radoux’s innovation, OakScan®, which enables the instantaneous selection of staves according to their polyphenolic index.
Pure Toast: a specially adapted toasting process
For the Omega barrel, Radoux has developed a specific toasting process to promote the bond between the tannins of the wood and those of the wine. Radoux’s traditional toasts involve a slow and prolonged heating followed by a « bousinage » operation (finishing stage with an increase in temperature) of variable intensity which enhances various aromas (toast, spices, vanilla, coconut...). With the Pure toast, only the initial toasting phase is implemented - at a low temperature and in depth. This gentle, long toast preserves the sweetness of the wood (maintains the polysaccharides on the surface) and because of the low degradation of tannins, your wine will acquire more volume. The raw material is therefore fully respected and the wine enhanced.
Respect of the fruit and of its nature
Tasting reveals that the Omega barrel highlights the fruit flavor and brings a balance between roundness, volume, tension and length on the palate. The tannins are well integrated, expressing freshness, elegance and finesse. The complexity of the aromas enables the fruit to shine through while respecting its origins. The Omega barrel offers an increase in roundness and volume - while perfectly respecting the fruit and its terroir - to great, powerful wines.
The Omega barrel is only available in a capacity of 225 liters and by allocation.
For more information or to order the Omega barrel contact your sales representative or the Radoux office.

New Launch of Tonnellerie Radoux USA’s Barrel Code SeriesStop by Radoux’s Unified booth, A312, to say hello to your sales representative and learn about our new barrels: the Barrel Code Series & OMEGA. Radoux USA’s Barrel Code Series will be officially launched at the 2020 Unified Trade Show.
Mindful of the ever-changing needs and expectations of our customers and international market trends, Radoux continues to prioritize the improvement of the range of our products and services.
THE BARREL CODE SERIES:
A Cab from Bordeaux is not a Cab from Napa, and a Cab from Napa is not a Cab from Paso Robles or Walla Walla. This custom-made barrel program was developed in the US with the collaboration of US winemakers and consultants specifically for US winemaking, and is produced in the US at our Santa Rosa, CA cooperage.
Radoux USA has been working on creating a local range of barrels with local winemakers for local wine programs since 2016. The goal is to reveal the terroir and respect the true expression of the varietals grown here.
The Barrel Code Series development pulls from the know-how of Radoux and all the innovation developed over decades of research on oak (selection of grain, polyphenols, Oakscan, seasoning and maturation) and an extensive inventory or French, American and Hungarian oaks.
In 2017 Radoux USA teamed with renowned winemaking consultant Jean Hoefliger to better understand the local winemaking challenges. In the last three years 3,000+ Barrel Code Series barrels have been trialed in more than 80 wineries in California and Washington.
How do you get into the Barrel Code Series for your wines? Visit Radoux’s booth at Unified or contact your sales representative. We might have already designed a barrel that fulfills your wish!
The Barrel Codes Series barrels are locally developed and produced for the USA market and thus offer more flexibility, easier approach, faster production, and better customer service.
Radoux USA has been offering its services to the US wine, spirits and beer industries for over 25 years and is continually seeking ways to better serve our customers. Think local ï¬rst!
OMEGA: Excellence, by Nature
To satisfy the increasing demand for barrels respectful of wine, fruit and terroir, Radoux has developed OMEGA, a new barrel for the aging of fine wines that was launched at the 2019 Unified Trade Show. Exceptional in its purity and finesse, Omega will reveal the identity of your wines with elegance and discretion.
The Omega barrel benefits from both OakScan, which enables the staves to be selected for moderate polyphenolic indices, and staves matured over three years. Radoux has developed a specific toast for the Omega barrel to enhance the blend of tannins of the oak with those of the wine, preserving the sweetness of the wood while the wine acquires more volume and texture. Tasting reveals that Omega gives emphasis to the fruit, with a balance between roundness, volume, tension and length on the palate. Tannins are soft, expressing freshness, elegance and finesse.

Radoux USA Welcomes Mark Evich as Business Development ManagerRadoux USA is proud to announce the addition of wine industry veteran Mark Evich to our sales team as Business Development Manager. Mark brings extensive experience to the role, having started his career in wine production in Sonoma County and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. For more than a decade, he has specialized in barrels and oak products, helping winemakers elevate their craft.
“I’m thrilled to join Radoux USA and look forward to partnering with winemakers to deliver exceptional oak solutions that enhance the art of winemaking,” said Mark Evich.
The Radoux group, based in the Cognac region of France, is a leading manufacturer of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels, puncheons, oak tanks, and casks. Additionally, our portfolio includes Pronektar: American and French oak granulates, chips, blocks, barrel inserts, and tank staves—available in a range of toasts and tannin content for both wine and spirit brands.
It’s no secret that oak enriches aromatics, textures, flavors, and ageability in wine and spirits. To ensure we provide the highest quality oak, Radoux has strict protocols for optimum oak sourcing, natural aging, sorting by grain, toasting regimes, and finishing. Our most exciting and new innovative scanning technology—Oakscan—allows us to measure the amount of polyphenols in wood instantaneously. After years of trial and error, we have also released our Omega & Nexus barrels—crafted with proprietary seasonings designed to enhance roundness and volume while providing balance and tension through precision-focused tannins that are expressive, elegant, and finesse-driven.
The same strict protocols and Oakscan technology are also applied to our oak adjunct brand, Pronektar—a line of oak granulates, chips, blocks, barrel inserts, and tank staves, highly suited to elevating textural, color, and flavor components for spirit brands. Given our spiritual home in Cognac, spirits have always been a vital part of our identity.
Trees harvested from forests in the Centre and Northeast France, provide us with extremely tight-grain oak. The same choice of grain applies to Eastern European oak selections. Radoux’s American Oak barrels are sourced from the highest quality white oak from Missouri, Minnesota, and the Appalachian regions.

Nektar PureVan: The Benchmark for Chips with a Vanilla Signature of Remarkable Purity and IntensityA pioneer in innovation applied to wood for winemaking, Pronektar is expanding its range with the launch of PureVan, a new type of wood chip specially designed to offer a vanilla aroma of unprecedented intensity and purity.
Designed as the first in a future series of “ingredient” chips, PureVan meets the expectations of winemakers looking for rich profiles, marked by sweetness and without excessive tannic structure.
A strategic need...
The PureVan project was born out of an initiative launched in 2017-2018, following an in-depth audit of the existing range and market benchmarking. This analysis highlighted the versatility of the offering, while revealing a significant opportunity for development around chips with more targeted and intensely characterized profiles, meeting specific oenological objectives.
A research and development program was therefore launched with two essential conditions: richness and precision.
Laboratory tests quickly showed that two parameters were fundamental to obtaining such profiles:
- A significantly longer toasting time to fully develop the aromas,
- Extremely precise temperature control to guarantee a clear sensory profile.
…at the origin of an innovation in the production line
As existing industrial equipment did not meet these criteria, Pronektar's R&D department began developing a custom toasting tool in collaboration with airflow experts and a specialist manufacturer. This work resulted in the development of a unique and revolutionary oven, designed specifically to meet the requirements of this new generation of technical chips.
Measurable and significant results
Made from an exclusive selection of French oak and toasted using this innovative process, PureVan reveals dominant notes of vanilla pod, Tahitian vanilla, and vanilla sugar, accentuating sweetness and volume on the palate, but without significantly adding to the structure.
Analyses carried out as part of the development project confirm this powerful and pure aromatic profile:
- Chemical analysis of the wood reveals levels of vanillin and specific aromatic compounds well above the market average. Other aromatic families are in the minority and within the benchmarking average.
- On tasting, the wine has a generously vanilla nose, a full and indulgent palate, and a marked length, without imbalance.

A targeted tool for clear oenological objectives
PureVan can be used in both fermentation and aging, on white, rosé, or red wines. A minimum contact time of one month is recommended, to be adjusted according to tastings.
It is particularly suitable for winemakers seeking a repeatable and identifiable aromatic signature, in line with the expectations of certain international markets, particularly Anglo-Saxon markets, which appreciate wines with an accessible, smooth, vanilla-flavored, and flattering style.

PRONEKTAR FERMENTATION OAK
FERMENTATION OAK: whether you are battling smoke taint or just want to give your wines an edge on oak aging and tannin integration.
Pronektar offers a full range of products in American and French oak (granulates, chips, tank and barrel staves, inserts, segments and blocks).
The two items specifically developed for fermentation are:
- NEKTAR FRESH - dry, un-toasted 100% French oak granulates
- DUO FRESH - a special blend of toasted and un-toasted 100% French oak granulates
Both products are made from carefully selected cooperage grade oak that is naturally seasoned and then analyzed by Oakscan®, a unique process developed by Radoux cooperage to select oak by its tannin content. This meticulous approach ensures homogeneity and reproducibility of results obtained when using these products in winemaking.
SMOKE TAINT: We are receiving a lot of inquiries about the use of oak in response to smoke taint. While there is no guaranteed treatment for smoke taint in grapes, studies conducted at UC Davis have shown that the application of un-toasted oak granulates during fermentation can reduce the aromatic effects.

Nektar ID Helps Winemakers Dealing with Smoke TaintPronektar, the brand of oak for enology from Radoux Cooperage, managed to mitigate “smoke taint” in 2020 wines using the nektar id trial kit
Some wines affected during the 2020 harvest by the massive fires on the West Coast, show the unpredictable and damaging “smoke taint” character. Winemakers need solutions to deal with this major issue.
Using oak alternatives is an option that can help ameliorate the “smoke taint”. However, how does one choose which oak products to use and the correct dosages for one’s wine?
Before the Nektar ID trial kit was developed, the only way to run trials was to soak oak samples in small volumes of wine. This method was long (several weeks to wait before tasting) and was lacking reliability (a small stick of oak cannot be representative of the large volume of staves necessary to treat a big tank of wine). If the experiment failed (oxidation of the samples, inappropriate dosage rate, etc.), everything had to be redone from the start.
The Nektar ID trial kit is instantly able to simulate the final organoleptic profile of a wine after aging with Pronektar oak products (chips, staves, blocks, etc.).
The kit contains a full set of liquid concentrates individually produced in large-scale volumes in order to make sure that they are fully representative of each product.
In a tasting, winemakers can immediately demonstrate the effect on their wine of every oak alternative of the Pronektar range by adding the concentrate in direct dilution.
The USA Pronektar Team recently completed some trials using Nektar ID on 2020 “smoke tainted” wines. They identified oak combinations able to mitigate “smoke taint”.
The USA Pronektar Team offers its Nektar ID trial service to winemakers with the target to help them minimize the appearance of “smoke taint” in their wines and to improve the final wine quality for the consumer.

Pronektar oak for enology was created by Radoux Cooperage in 1999 and supplies more than 500 wineries in the USA. Pronektar’s latest innovation, the Nektar ID trial kit, has already helped design hundreds of profiles of wines in more than 30 countries all over the world.
